2000 Chevrolet Impala LS review from North America
"This experience has left me distrustful of the GM product and customer service"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
58,000 miles, the ABS and Traction system warning light would come on and turn the traction system off. Took it into the dealer and was told there were no error codes for that problem. They stated the fuel pressure regulator was bad. $650 to repair. ABS and Traction system lights still come on 3 or 4 times a year. Better than 3 or 4 times a day I guess.
65,000 driver window went down and wouldn't come back up (winter in MN, not a good time) Dealer said they couldn't get it in for a couple of days and had no place to keep it inside, out of the snow. Took it to local mechanic, $150 to repair.
Brakes and rotors have been replaced three times.
Since the 118,000 mark, replaced upper intake manifold gasket, another fuel pressure regulator (turns out it was a recall), oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor, oil pan gasket, an injector, the plugs and wire harness, the battery,,,, twice, the alternator, the water pump, the catalytic converter and the blower resistor switch. Total $4500.00.
127,500 miles, I have no dash board lights,,,, at all and rear defrost doesn't work. My mechanic spent 4 hours researching and gave up finally because the wiring is such a mess. He didn't even charge me for his time, he was throughly disgusted with the car. It is now at the dealership. They say it is the Body Control Module, $400 and that I also need a lower intake manifold gasket and a valve cover gasket. Those two items total $1300.00.
This is above and beyond the normal oil changes, tires, belts, hoses, wipers, transmission fluid changes and a thermostat. I have now paid more in repairs than I paid for the car.
General comments?
I was very excited to buy the car. It is a beautiful vehicle, especially with the dark tinted windows, moon roof and spoiler. I had never had a car so comfortable, roomy, big and FAST!!! The engine was powerful and the handling was superior.
Now I just don't trust it to take out of the city limits, let alone send my 18 daughter out in it. Which means she has to drive my Mustang convertible,,,, scary!
I would not buy another impala, and the Chevy Lumina I owner before it was not much better.
Oh,,,, and the transmission is slipping.
