1992 Chevrolet Lumina review from North America
"Luminate your life!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Turn signal relay replaced once-
Goes through a set of brake pads each year-
Crank sensor and O2 sensor replaced (easy to do urself) -
Transmission TCC solenoid sticks (unplug to fix =) -
Leaks oil slowly yet constantly -
Head gasket went out at 190k-
Alternator burned up at 200k-
General comments?
Got this car for free in 1999 when my grandma passed away with 75k grandma driven miles so it was in pretty good shape. Drove it with absolutly no major problems for 2 years, then got a 1998 mercury tracer and garaged this. After about a year the tracer engine blew so went back and Lumina fired right up. have been driving it on and off ever since 2001 have had only slight parts needed such as brakes, bulbs, and 2 sensors. Head gasket blew out at 190k, was gonna junk it, but for kicks put some engine block seal crap in there and have been driving it fine for 17k miles lol. At about 200k the tranny started getting stuck in OD because of the
TCC solenoid needing replacing, worked around this by unplugging it, lost some gas mileage, but hey, I'm driving this beast into the ground at this point.
This I like about this particular car are:
The wipers do the inverted thing-
The seats are amazing, the back ones are soft and roomy
and the front ones are great even for long trips and they connect so it makes a comfy place to get down with your special guy/girl-
Adequate power when you need to pass or merge, you gotta really punch it though-
ABS, nice to have when you live up north like me-
Things I do NOT like about this particular car:
The design of the dash/gauge cluster, wow fugly-
Bounces and jounces a lot on bumpy roads or windy highways-
Changing the brakes anually really sucks-
Not exactly a chick magnet-
And in conclusion this car is nothing flashy or fancy, but to get groceries or go to work/school you can depend on the ole Lumina to get you there.
