"Disappointing money pit"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
One week off of the dealers lot the car needed a new wheel bearing. I should have taken this as a sign of things to come...
Every 20000 miles I've needed new brake pads/rotors/drums. To date this has cost me more than $6000. I've been to several mechanics GM and non-GM. Both have admitted that the design on the Malibu brakes was really bad... too bad GM will never admit that. The non-GM mechanic says he's tried every type of pad and nothing seems to stop this problem.
Air conditioner cuts out intermittently and car occasionally stutters upon accelerating. I believe this is due to a bad thermostat but GM said that's not the problem, not that they could find a problem.
The alternator went bad on my way home from work at 70000 miles, normal wear and tear?
Most recently had the Dex cool radiator fiasco at 75000 miles (apparently normal for this car) so $1000 poorer and one replaced head gasket later. Thanks GM and Dex cool.
My check engine light is now on and the driver side power window is cutting in and out. Plus it must be time for new brakes again.
General comments?
Except for the horrible design flaws leading to constant and costly repairs, I've really liked my Malibu. It has nice power and good handling. Fits my family of four nicely with great trunk space.
