1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS review from North America
"Let's build it as fast and cheap as we can!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Heater fan does not work on settings 1 or 2.
ABS light stays on no matter what (I've cleared it 8 times).
Front end has a very odd vibration when turning the wheel (especially over 100km) but have checked bearings.
Seats flattening out.
Spark plug shattered.
Lights dim when hitting brake, but the battery never dies and holds a good charge (haven't checked ALT, but assume it's good)
Rear springs sitting pretty low.
Key-less (FOB) entry stopped working.
General comments?
This car was owned by my grandma for 8 years.
Always driven slow, garaged and serviced.
It handles like a 2 ton, but accelerates OK for a 3.1.
Ever tried to change the spark plugs? Dumbest design I've ever seen.
Should not be aging this quick.
Changed plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, Tran fluid, oil is Mobil 1 syn, O2 sensor, front pads, PCV valve, used injector cleaner and tank treatment, also used engine oil treatment for cars over 120000, always well maintained!
Yet this car doesn't even get 500km to the tank???
My truck cost me 1300 with 164000km and all I had to change was the water pump, EVERYTHING original. It's pretty sad that a car 18 years newer falls apart that much quicker.
I loved the look of this car, it would have been nice as a sleeper, but it's too bad GM doesn't care about quality
