I've only put 7500 miles on this car, so it doesn't get much wear.
The only thing I've had wrong with it is warped rotors. The dealer replaced them, and said that was a common problem with Malibu's.
Other than the rotors, really no problems whatsoever.
The car is a great family sedan.
It has great acceleration, and is very roomy in the passenger compartment.
There are plenty of nice little "extras"
GM added to the vehicle as well, including 3 hidden cup holders.
When I receive my 2000 Malibu L'S, I have had the rotors replaced twice because they were on recall; next the transmission started slipping and shuddering I took the car back to the dealers service department they replace several sensors, TRANSMISSION, and finally a speed controller for hard shifting from park to drive in fact any gears, and the transmission is still slipping and shuddering My opinion of the 2000 Malibu L'S this car is a piece of JUNK a LEMON a JOKE GM / Chevrolet should be a shame of this product.
I've had my 2000 malibu for since August of 2003- I have had one problem. it is realy loud when I first start it up in the morning. (usually when it is cold) it gets so loud almost like a truck when you start it up. I took it back to the dealer - they said it was a bad alternator. they fixed it and it is still happening. I've been taking it back to the dealer about 5 times since then. all they can say is that there is no problem with the car. but other than that. I love it...!!! haha!
Regarding the post above this one, the "truck like sound" is common, it's called "piston slap" (search)
excess clearences cause the pistons to rock in the cylinders, creating a "diesel" engine like sound.
I have the same problem.
For the individual who is experiencing harsh/loud starts in the mornings... try replacing your PCV valve. I had similar problems a year ago, when someone recommended replacing PCV valve. My '00 Malibu does not experience loud starts any longer. Hope this helps.
