2000 Chevrolet Malibu LS review from North America
"A great looking mechanical nightmare"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Flasher relay went out at 12,000 miles, had this clicking noise in the dash.
Had to replace the front brake pads and calipers at 20,000 miles.
The air conditioner kicks out every few minutes. We have had everything from the compressor to the relay switches replaced and still the same thing.
I can't seem to keep all the brake lights working, every time I watch my wife back out of the driveway, there's another bulb blown.
The ignition switches are a terrible safety hazard, when they go faulty they actually activate the theft deterrent system which kills any chance of restarting the car. I have had this problem three times now. I have actually made an extra key that stays in the ignition so I can lock my car and leave it running if I'm on the road just so I don't have to face this problem away from home.
I have had numerous "check engine" lights which have turned out to be high sensor voltage (I can't recall the code right now) to the computer which in my own opinion is a major cause of premature relay and bulb wear, but the factory voltage regulator has been replaced twice, the last at my expense.
General comments?
The car handles well and drives great.
The engine is very strong and peppy and the transmission is very tight shifts great.
Overall satisfaction is fair. I would not consider owning anything, but a General Motors product, but another car is out of the question. A pickup or sport-utility is the way to go, normal wear and tear and time perfected engine, electrical, and drive train issues are all, but non-existent.
My truck is a 1997 Chevrolet pickup with 118,000 miles on it now and it hasn't seen the inside of a mechanic's shop yet. I couldn't be happier with it.
