2001 Chevrolet Malibu LS from North America - Comments

"You get what you pay for.."

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Front brake rotors, front brake pads. The front pads came loose at 35,000 miles. The repair involved turning the rotors and replacing the front pads. NOT covered under warranty, despite the fact that the car mileage was within new car miles and dates; and despite the fact that this appears to be a common problem on Chev Malibus. Front end noise on this model is excessive, both before and after the repair.

General comments?

1) Excessive front end noise.

2) Front end brake problems seem to be common.

3) GM won't cover these problems under warranty.

4) Front tire wear also seems excessive.

You are so right!! I have to replace my front brake pads at least every 4-6 months. This is a ongoing issues, seems most every complaint includes their braking system. However, most places warranty the pads for life, so all your out is the labor of having them replaced and the MAJOR HEADACHE of having to deal with this constant issue.

My front tires also wear extremely fast.

My car has started running warm, this started about 2 years ago, around 60K miles. We thought it was the intake manifold because it was leaking, had that repaired, but it still runs warm. We've never been able to find out what is causing this.

Also, my airbag light came on one day for no apparent reason. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it home or that thing was going to pop out in my face while I was driving.

Some of the other sensor lights have come on for a short time, but gone off within my drive home.

Other things I've attributed to normal wear and tear.

I haven't a clue what I was thinking when I bought this car, but will NEVER buy another Malibu.
