"Musclecar wanna-bee"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Always has fuel problems. I have replaced the fuel pump, the filter, blew out the lines and removed and cleaned the pick-up in the tank. It still runs the float bowl dry when I drive hard.

The bolts that hold the exhaust pipe to the manifold rusted and broke off the so I can't fix the exhaust.

A mysterious "clunking" sound from rear end when I hit a bump.

Steering column is very worn. (can "tilt" wheel in all directions!)

The "floor" shifter won't go into park without twisting the steering column!

Most interior switches and handles have broken off or don't work. Also the doors cannot be opened from the outside so I always have to leave a window open...

General comments?

The car is fairly fast once you get it rolling. And mine doesn't handle half bad for a car this size. Although it does have new performance tires.

My 1985 Thunderbird Turbocoupe was faster, got much better milage, handled better, and had 185,000 miles on with no major problems. But Wisconsin rust has taken it away from me!

A lot of your problems are common to G-Bodies like the Monte Carlo. I can almost guarantee your steering column is not "worn". Four bolts that hold the tilt mechanism together more than likely worked themselves out a little bit. Also, regarding your shifting problem, the bushings in the linkage are prone to wear. It's a relatively easy fix.

It's all part of owning a used car.
