1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS review from North America
"The most fun you can have with front wheel drive on a budget"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The brakes sqealed a lot. The cause is the brakes for life that the car came with. I stopped using the cheap metallic pads and bought some Wagners and the problem is gone.
I had to replace the fuel pump at 165000 km.
Alternator and battery at 180000km.
Also the A/C condenser, but that was because of damage caused by stones falling out of a dump truck on the highway.
All other repairs were just routine maintenance items like brakes, tune-ups and fluids.
General comments?
The performance of this car is impressive! The only fault I can find is passing power at highway speeds is disappointing when compared to the power you get at lower speeds. I have friends that drive an impressa wrx, porche 944 and intrepid RS that have driven with me and didn't believe that the car was not a Z34 until I lifted the hood and showed them the 3.1 engine.
The car carves through turns perfectly even to this day and I still have the factory struts on the car. From the way it feels throwing it through turns at high speeds I can safely say that this car will not roll over unless you are sideways in a 4 wheel drift at high speeds and blow out your tires. It is very stable and predictable.
All this and I get 7 liters per 100km on highway driving and the engine still feels factory fresh.
The only problem I had with the car when I first got it is that the engine is so quiet sometimes I forgot it was running. I learned to look at the RPM gauge if I am not sure if it's running.
