This is a great car. First of all it was completely rebuilt by a family friend and he sold it to someone who didn't take care of it properly. We bought it after that and have only had minor problems:
Replaced battery $50.
Replaced altenator $75.
Replaced distributor cap $25.
Overall this is a great car and for a 78 I am shocked at how reliable it is. My husband is able to work on it easily and he loves how powerful and fast it is. The only real complaint I have is that it's a cold starter in the winter. I'm used to the newer models who start right up and take right off. Also it took me a while to get the hang of changing gears (even though it's an automatic) because the dial doesn't read correctly so you have to feel it rather then look at it. Other than that we love it. The heater works great and it has plenty of room in the cabin and trunk. It looks really nice too since it has all new paint and upholstery.
If you're looking to buy a Nova and it's been restored you can't go wrong.
Cars have had fuel injection for so long now, most people have forgotten how hard it was to start a carburetor-equipped car in cold weather.
And the gear indicator problem is an easy fix, your husband should have been able to have taken care of that already.
I have a 1978 Chevy Nova that we purchased last year. It is a real sweet car, owned by a little old lady who bought it new. It had 29,000 on it when we got it and had always been garaged. It still has a block of wood on the gas pedal because she couldn't reach it good. The only thing I don't like about it is it's funky green color with a white roof. I would like to have it painted a different color and would like some help in picking a color, nothing too bright or flashy. Any one have any ideas?
How about eggplant purple with a pink roof?
The block of wood under the pedal was to stop her from speeding.
If she had problems reaching the pedal, the block of wood would have been on the top of the pedal.
My grandfather had one of these, and I will have to say the block of wood is there to keep people from speeding. He even had Impala SS Tri star wheel covers on it. Man, I wish I had those wheel covers.
