Brakes replaced at 80000; rotors turned at 80000; transmission sick at 87000.
Own 94 Prizm also; 99 prizm far less quality. mechanic replacing transmission says it is a Isuzu make transmission. makes me question weather Chevrolet produced hybrid toyota/isuzu. thought I was buying knock off Toyota Corrolla. maybe not! love 94 Prizm, 165000 miles strong, don't think 99 Prizm will make it that far.
I know this sounds insane because its the same car, but the Geo Prizms seemed better than the 98 and newer Chevy prizm, maybe the Chevrolet name cursed it.
The 1998-up Chevy Prizm had three different transmissions, the 5-spd manual, and the 3-spd and the 4-spd overdrive automatics, respectively. Of the automatics, the 4-spd auto was the much better choice for performance and economy. Neither transmission was Isuzu based. The Geo Storm was a sister car of the Isuzu Impulse/Azuna. The repair person is mistaken about the Prizm transmission.
All Prizms were built in the Toyota/GM NUMMI plant in Fremont, California. Now the Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix are built there.
I love my 1999 Chevy Prizm. It has a little over 87000 miles on it, that has included a trip from Ohio to Texas and several in between. I haven't had one problem out of it (knock on wood).
Ditto on the Prizm NOT having Isuzu xmissions. Prizm is 100% Toyota/NUMMI.
Some Chevy Cavaliers had Isuzu xmissions... these are the Caliviers that DIDN'T have xmission troubles!
Some Cobalts, Ions, G5, and HHRs have Fiat tranmissions!
Global Economy... research it.
