1992 Chevrolet S-10 Regular Cab 2x4 Tahoe review from North America
"Excellent Compact Truck"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The light bulbs inside the instrument cluster burnt out around 211,000 miles. It cost roughly $10 to buy new bulbs and it took about an hour to disassemble the dash put the bulbs in and reassemble the dash.
Intake Manifold Gasket had to be replaced at 213,000 miles. Cost about $70 for parts and I got it done at school (I take an auto class) so the labor was free, but the labor would normally be over $300.
General comments?
This truck is excellent. It was pretty much given to me because things kept going wrong with my previous car.
Its not too glamorous, but it looks kind of nice. It has lots of low end power (I have pulled past Civics and Integras in a straight line) and still has some passing power on the freeway.
The seats are not too comfortable in the regular cab, but definitely acceptable. If you are tall I recommend the extended cab version as I am 5' 5" and drive with the seat pretty close to all the way back.
The stock speakers sound pretty clear.
The Air Conditioner does not work too well, but works nonetheless. It probably needs a recharge.
It has excellent visibility and almost no blind spots.
The only real gripe I have about this car is the handling. It handles decent on dry roads as long as you don't push it too hard (you should be going the speed limit anyways).
The wet traction is pretty awful; if you are turning don't use too much (if any) throttle or the rear tires will most likely spin. When starting from a stop the tires may spin as well. Most importantly if it is wet leave lots of stopping room in front of you as it only has rear anti lock brakes and the fronts do lock (this can put you into bad skids). It is for this reason I refuse to consider driving this truck where there is snow. It would probably be better with 4x4.
The catalytic converter rattles, previous owner told me that the person that put it in did a sloppy job and there is a piece of metal inside it. Not really an issue as far as how the car runs.
The timing chain is pretty stretched, but it the previous owner never serviced it and they owned it from about 100,000 miles and its questionable as to weather or not it still has the original timing chain. I intend to replace it soon as it is considered standard service on most vehicles to replace the timing chain every 100,000 miles.
Overall this truck is very excellent. If I drive the speed limit on the freeway I can get about 20 miles per gallon. It is very reliable and runs like new with almost 215,000 miles. I would recommend it to anybody.
