1999 Chevrolet S-10 LS from North America - Comments

"A nice vehicle to have"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Some seals in the transmission went out at around 50,000 miles. The dealer fixed it under warranty.

The third door handle has broken twice, but it has been replaced by the dealer twice.

General comments?

Overall, I feel that this truck is a good truck. It lacks in power when you have the 4 cylinder engine, but it can still tow my boat. It is a nice little truck for someone who wants a truck but doesn't want a huge vehicle.

This truck handles pretty well. The ride is just like any other truck... a little bumpy at times.

Your lack of power is not due to the 4 cylinder engine; more due to the automatic transmission. I don't currently own an S-10, but I've driven my fair share, and if you want the 4 cylinder to perform then you need the manual transmission. That's just how it is.

I have to agree with the last comment. I have a '99 S-10 with a manual transmission, and it has a good amount of power for a 4 cylinder.

So, let me get this straight... the transmission seals went out at 50,000 miles and a door handle has broken off twice on a vehicle with only 53,000 miles on it, yet you consider it a reliable vehicle? I just don't get it. The only thing I can figure is that you've owned some pretty unreliable vehicles in the past. Personally, I'd much rather have a used Volvo 940 turbo wagon for the same price. It's definitely a hell of a lot faster than any 4 cylinder powered pickup (especially automatic models), it's way safer, much more comfortable to drive, can town that boat of yours, carry a similar sized amount of cargo, and will not have transmission seals go out at 50,000 miles or door handles break off (sorry, but that part is pathetic). Considering that most everyone has the internet at home now, I highly recommend doing some serious research before buying your next new or used vehicle.

I bought a used 1999 s-10 with a 4 cyl automatic. The power stinks the trans. burnt up at 38,000 and I had it repaired at a genuine G.M. Dealer for 1600.00. Fortunately for me G.M. stands firmly behind thier work and provide the 12,000 / 12 mo. warranty because 1700 miles later the truck is back in for trans. repair. The service manager said " The forward sprague broke and they are repairing." The dealership is taking care of me which is great considering the ford dealership I bought it from just laughed at me since I used up the 1000 mile warranty they gave me! I have always drove G.M. products and would buy them in the future, but I would not recommend purchasing from Moore Motor's in Caro, Mi. They could have at least returned my call when this problem occured after only having the vehicle for 2 payments. An Automotive Blue Collar Man!

I have recently bought a 99 s-10 with a 4 cylinder. And I love my truck, I wouldn't trade it for anything. It handles nicely and just all around a good truck.

I bought a 2000 xtreme about a year ago, it also has a 2.2l, but I honestly don't think it is really that slow I think that it gets up a goes pretty quick for a 4 banger, I wish it was a stick, but that's OK, I still love it and would never give it up!!
