"Gutless Truck"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I purchased my 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup new in March 2001. I traded a 1984 Nissan Pickup that had 350,000 miles on the original engine and 5-speed transmission. The guy who purchased my Nissan says that it now has over 400,000 miles with the same engine and transmission without any problems. I never did anything to the truck other than replace the battery, tires, wiper blades and brakes. What a different story with the S-10 pickup. The first year I owned it I had it in the shop 14 times with problems ranging from the rear seal being replaced, the brakes being replaced, the brakes failing four times, the fuel pump replaced, seals in the engine and transmission leaking and being replaced, the air- conditioner failing numerous times and still not working properly, the handle to recline the seat breaking off, the passenger seat not staying secure and gliding back and forth as you accelerate or use the brake, a rear gear going out and having to be replaced, and numerous other problems with the truck. It has the 4-cylinder engine and is gutless. The stereo system works great, the ride of the truck is awful. I feel as though I am riding over a washboard when I drive it. It is very discouraging when you purchase a new vehicle and am afraid to drive it more than 50 miles from home. The purchase price was over $19,000 and I still owe a little over $8,000 and will trade this truck for either a Nissan or Toyota so that I will have a dependable vehicle as soon as it is paid off.

Hi, I have an S-10 2000 like yours is extended cab and I have a problem with my brake lights on, the emergency break and the ABS Break both of them are on and I wonder if you did have the same problem! All the places tell me that I need to check with the computer to see what is going on with it and most of the places are 65 dollars one hour plus fix it so… my breaks work OK, but my ABS I don’t think that they are working so if you know anything about this please let me know. I had 2000 s-10 and loved it. I had to sell it in 2004 to help out some family, but would gladly buy another. As to your comment on the truck being gutless; any truck with a 4 banger is gutless. Nobody should buy a truck with a 4 cylinder engine. The 4.3 V6 is one of the best engines ever made. I have seen several with nearly 200,000 miles on them and they still squall the tires leaving the line and pull anything a normal person would need. So, to anyone considering the S-10, get the V6 and you won't have the trouble others have had. The ride is not like a luxury car, but it's a truck. The rear end is light, like all trucks, and the suspension is set up to take a payload. If you want a great ride, buy a town car. If you want a truck, expect some bumps and get the right amount of power. The S-10 is a great truck.

I too have a 2000 S10 and wow have I had problems! My master cylinder has gone out twice, now somethings up with the transmission, my headlights won't stay balanced and people think I drive with my high beams on all the time. My driver door hangs funny all of a sudden so when I close it I have to lift up on the door. My driver seat handle also broke off, and the black weather strip outside of the windows will not stay secure so when I roll up my window they go with it! Its been nothing, but problems! If anyone else has these problems please email me and let me know if you were able... cheaply to get them repaired! I have no idea what to do about any of them! Thanks! cherishedtiger@hotmail.com.

I am the proud owner of a 2000 ZR2 ext cab 4x4, this makes about the 9th or 10th S10 I've owned, and I just purchased this truck last week Feb. 22nd.

I've had'em all from a 1982 to the 2000 model; Blazers, ext cab, short box, 2WD and 4WD, small 4 banger thru the vortec V6, one converted to 358ci. roller motor (440 hp.) and I've loved everyone of them.

Of course you eventually blow a motor or replace a transmission, but you can expect that when you drive anywhere at all! Cars aren't made to be bulletproof, and brakes going out, clutches slipping is quite normal for people on earth.

Preventive maintenance is required on anything with wheels.

I will say that the 4 bangers are not cost effective means of reliable transportation; they are more prone to having issues. The 4.3L is the way to go if you're looking for reliability, I've had one with 300,000 miles and 2 with almost that many.

Good luck to all you S10 fans out there, and all the rest of you guys can continue driving your Mazdas.
