1991 Chevrolet S-10 std. cab short box review from North America
"Cheap, slow, kinda ugly, but lovable"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
First motor gave out at 217,000kms connecting rod through the block.
Second motor started rod knocking at 268,000kms, so I rebuilt it.
Waterpump and starter have both gone on me.
Clutch master and slave at 281,000.
Changed brake pads ONCE in the 80,000kms I've owned it, and I drive it hard (it's even been autocrossed)
General comments?
Well, I bought this truck over 5yrs ago to use as an in-between truck when gas prices first went up and I thought they'd go back down and I could afford another V8.
The in-betweener turned into a love affair. She's lowered 5" in the front, 8" in the rear, and wears Camaro wheels with low-pro tires...she's just about on the ground.
When the first motor blew I tossed in another '91 2.5, when that wore out I rebuilt it... as far as we know she's the fastest, most built 2.5 in Canada.
To tell you the truth S10s suck. They're loud, they're useless without a tonneau for everyday commuting, and the 2.5 in stock form, and even built form, is pathetically slow. And yet... I can't bring myself to sell it. Even after 5yrs and a ton of money later...I'm still thinking of ways to improve her... an airbag suspension is next. But they take a beating...she's been dragraced, drifted, autocrossed, she's moved me across the province, and everywhere in between, she's hauled dressers (even though she's only an inch off the ground), my mountain bike, and my friend's motorbike. Lowered, they handle like they're on rails and with a few mods, you can wake the Two-Five up. The interior has been upgraded with a '95 bench and some Blazer doorpanels, so it's pretty comfy in there now. Gets more looks than anything I've ever owned and listening to the lowrider song while you're pushing pebbles down the main drag is priceless.
