2000 silverado
good or crap.
The engine noise you are hearing is piston slap, and it is because those engines used hypereutectic pistons, which are actually very desirable in their longevity and durability characteristics. That type of piston can make noise before they warm up, because they actually expand and contract slightly, to match the slight expansion and contraction of the cylinder walls around them. Until the engine becomes slightly warm, the piston is making noise, coming from the skirt area. This is not a longevity issue, I believe you will be OK from the research I have done.
I have seen many of these engines with over 400k on them, just plugging right along with that same noise when cold. Because of the consumer misunderstandings, concerns and complaints about this issue, the newer models were modified to eliminate the noise, but it was never an actual operational problem. If you find one example of one of these motors where it caused actual engine damage, I would be highly surprised because I have not, and I researched it thoroughly because I have the same issue in my 5.3 which is the same family of engines.
