2000 Chevrolet Silverado LS 1500 review from North America

"A quick, reliable and comfortable truck that gets good gas mileage"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

30,000 throttle started sticking closed, had to tap pedal to get butterfly open. Local shop cleaned the throttle body and adjusted throttle cable. Cost $20.00.

65,000 miles power steering started whining, added power steering fluid and put up with the whine. Need new pump. Still have not fixed.

105,000 had to add some A/C refrigerant. It was still cold just not freezing me out of the truck. Cost $10.00.

107,000 miles the parking brakes on the rear needed to be replaced, should have been done at 80,000. Because of neglect had to get new driver side rotor. The parking brakes are drum brakes inside of the rear rotors. Cost $225.00 (rotor, pads and labor)

Have replaced a few daytime running lights.

New windshield at 107,000.

General comments?

Trans flushed at 50,000 and 100,000.

Coolant, rear end (locking) and brake fluid flushed at 100,000.

This has been a great truck. It is a regular cab two-wheel drive. This truck has been used hard and driven fast in the 110+ heat of Phoenix, AZ. Most of the miles are stop and go city driving or pulling trailers, in the mountains or the heat of the desert. The last pull I did was a 7,000-pound trailer in 105deg heat up 5% grade.

The brakes have been the best I have ever seen on any pickup. I still have half of the pad left with 108,000 miles on it and don't use trailer brakes when towing.

This truck likes to be revved when pulling (2nd and 3rd gear). It has been to the drag strip many times; best E. T is 15.6@85mph.

It is pretty quiet and comfortable (power seats) for a truck.

The truck gets 21mpg on long trips and about 17mpg around town, has gotten 9mpg while towing (80mph pulling fifth wheel trailer) usually about 12mpg when towing.

The oil has been changed every 5,000 miles, and the only other items bought for the truck are tires and air filters.

I also manually shift when pulling; I don't let it shift back and forth. I think that is the key to Chevy transmission longevity.

My next truck will be another Silverado, probably an HD with a Diesel.
