1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus 1.0 from North America

Summary:

Puts Ford's Festiva to SHAME

Faults:

Replaced the front brakes several times and I've recently put in a new clutch, not because the old one was ready to go, it's just that I had the money so I figured I might as well.

Besides that, nothing really has went wrong with the car, I think that the alternator might be getting ready to go but I'm not sure.

General Comments:

I bought this car in 1990 after getting rid of my 1988 Ford Festiva which by the way is the biggest piece of JUNK ever made, I had that car only a few years and had the most problems with the engine and electricals that I've ever had with any car.

This Sprint has far outdone the Festiva, I know a neighbor of mine has a 1992 Festiva and it's only got about 88,000 miles and the engine sounds like a tractor or something and my little 3 cylinder with 174K just keeps on putting along with the 40mpg that I get even more on the highway.

Another thing you wouldn't believe is the ease this thing has on the interstate, you can go 75 or 80 and you can't even hear the little engine. This is by far the best little car I've ever owned.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus 1.0 from North America

Summary:

Get ready to downshift a lot, also a great gas saver

Faults:

A/C is broken, compressor is out. Carb is starting to get weird acting choking alot. Motor mounts are worn out. First spark plug continues to get fowled out every few weeks. Radiator is plugged up causing the car to run hot. Had to straight wire the cooling fan because the switch went out. Car backfires real bad in the first 5 mins that you are on the road.

General Comments:

I bought this car because I was told it was an older Geo Metro which I can say that it is, an older one though. This is a very dependable car, it's just very very slow and parts are almost impossible to find anymore for anything to do with this car. Gas saver.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus 1.0 from North America

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

This car has 165,000 miles and I've never done anything to it except the required maintenance. No knocks in the engine. Even the clutch is still good. Never uses any oil. Best car I ever owned! Gets 45mpg+!

1986 Chevrolet Sprint L Plus 1.0 from North America

Faults:

Well, the engine is starting to knock but it has 145,000 miles. Nothing awful has gone wrong with the car, just average things.

General Comments:

This is a great commuter car but it's not that good on interstates, in fact it's awful on interstates. The gas mileage is GREAT. I know it's time to get rid of it but I really hate to see it go :)

Comment regarding the statement that it's time to get rid of your Sprint after 145,000 miles: I don't agree. My '85 Sprint has 206,000 miles on it! My husband's pressuring me to unload it but I just won't do it because I'm not convinced there is another car as good as this one has been. I am simply spoiled by its dependability and I will drive it until it runs no more. Go forth and do likewise!

1986 Chevrolet Sprint 3 cyl. from North America

Faults:

Oil burner starting at 60,000 miles. Automatic waits too long to up shift & sometimes won't. No power (raced a VW Bug & he blew me away). Death trap (same size as a Yugo). Gas fumes very strong. Noisy. 1 bbl carburetor is a pain in the butt to work on (left me stranded many times because of this). Rust all over. With a 3 cylinder when 1 plug is misfiring, you will definitely know it (it does not run).

General Comments:

One good thing - when it runs, it gets 50 mpg. I'll sell it for $1 or a dohnut.

I'd buy it for a dollar. I need parts for my 86. My mechanic wouldn't allow it to pass inspection this year (07/04). Some of the parts it needs are no longer available he said. It only has 74,000 miles on it and runs great.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus 5-dr 1.0 3 cyl from North America

Faults:

Timing belt "retired" at 132,000 miles.

Five-year battery died after nine years of service. Front brake rotors tend to warp easily.

General Comments:

Unlike the other Sprint reviewer who suggested these cars won't last (another example of ignorant American prejudice against small cars), mine has gone 141,000 miles and is still going strong. Probably my favorite car, with the exception of the Renault I once owned.
