1976 Chevrolet Van ChevyVan G30 review from North America
"Powerful, roomy yet comfortable way to work and play"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Transmission went bad. Took it to a shop and was informed the original 1-ton Turbo 400 transmission had been replace with a 3/4 ton Turbo 350 that was completely shot. I had them install a new TH400. Cost: $1500.
Had engine serviced. Found carburetor was worn out. I had it rebuilt (new ones not available). and general tune-up. Cost: $550.
Replaced fuel pump, valve cover gaskets, hoses and belts. Cost: $100.
General comments?
I was given this van. It had been sitting at the coast for several years, but started right up and I drove it 400 miles home. It used to be a government surveillance van, complete with periscope. It is fully insulated and carpeted.
I had a hitch built for it ($300) and have towed cars on trailers with it. I have put over a ton inside and it handles great. It only reduced the mileage by 2 mpg. With 16 1/2 inch rims and siped commercial tires, I had no trouble handling winter in Eastern Washington.
Although mileage is not real good (12-14 mpg), and parking can be a little tricky, it is an excellent hauler and tower. The couch folds to make a nice bed for long distance travel as well as camping. The big captain chairs with armrests is like driving your easy chair. And you cannot beat the great ground clearance.
