2001 Chrysler 300M review from North America
"Good used prices, but prepare to pay the difference in maintenance"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Oh boy, where to begin. Bought used in 07 from a Chrysler dealership with a standard 30-day warranty. Car couldn't pass e-check after the check engine light came on a week after having it. Took it back, but they said it wasn't covered by the warranty. Took it to another dealership and forked over $200 to repair a minor evaporative leak.
Four months into ownership, air conditioning craps out. There's another $350.
And last but not least in my first year of ownership, transmission eats itself for dinner on a Friday night out. Thank goodness for friends who will venture out and pick out up at 11PM just because. Totally destroyed planetary gears and torque converter. $2300 repair.
Also, paint is not the best quality; and the wheels are peeling! Speakers are great! that is, until they break. The little one in the center dash will go first; I know there is an least one other dead one that I have not located yet.
Will take car in for service this weekend because the front suspension makes a loud squeaking sound when wheel is turned more than 1/4...
I went back and calculated how much I paid per mile for the first year of ownership. Considering the fact that I plan to pay for it over 18 months, it cost me almost $1 per mile to drive for the first year. Does this sound like a car you want to own? Didn't think so!
General comments?
The 300m is a very nice car. I always have people commenting to me how great it looks from the outside, and they are even more impressed by the quality of interior on the Chrysler. It has plenty of performance for a large sedan, and the engine sounds great. Handling is almost decent. It corners well, but there is significant understeer at speeds of 55+ MPH. And I swear these tires will last forever!
I simply wish they were more reliable. It's cars like this that make you wish you bought the extended warranty.
