1988 Chrysler Conquest TSi Sport review from North America
"High class for low class budget"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Bought the car with a bent rim, no exterior rear view mirrors or assemblies.
Tilt steering did not lock in place (floated when driving), one of the cylinders was mis-firing (bad plug), 2 flat tires, and the sunroof seal was eroding but does not leak.
It pulled hard right (due to bad tires), but when turned left the car would shake violently (due to the bent rim).
The car also had numerous dings and dents in the body... this car was NOT taken well care for in its short lifetime spent on the road.
General comments?
It had sat for years when I found it. Fixed the bent rim, replaced tires, all fluids, plugs and wires, distributor, and had the rear end rebuilt due to old and dirty grease in the rearend.
Now the car will out perform anything of equal value or under... most of them even a bit more expensive than the Conquest.
This car was built by Mitsubishi and imported (yes it's a true import), so don't plan on finding any parts for the Conquest... look for Starion. Coming up with parts can be tricky since it was a rare car and long since discontinued, but if you find a good running one with low miles, it's worth it! Whatever the price!
Power to weight ratio is very acceptable, the climate control is much ahead of its time, and the front mount intercooler makes it look dangerous coming down the freeway.
The independent suspension is second to none for its year. You cannot find a good forced induction true sports car under 5 grand... other than this car.
The wide body on this car makes it look mean, however the 9" rear wheels mixed in give it an ungodly ability to handle corners at high speeds. Rear end sliding out from underneath you? Let off the throttle a bit and you straighten out immediately with the short wheel base.
Drift or drag, this car is an excellent baseline to start with, especially if you are wanting to keep the price down. I would put my Conquest up against any new car under $20,000 through the canyons.
Fantastic car... highly recommended.
