1988 Chrysler Fifth Avenue review from North America
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Fuel Pump ($11.00) Water Pump ($19.00) Brake rotors warped at around 100k, new ones were 17 bucks each. I swapped out the computer with an older ignition box and vacume controlled distributor at around 120k parts were $20 from the junk yard. I've put almost a hundred thousand miles on this car and my total repair costs are probably less than $100 (not including oil changes, brake pads and regular service stuff) I hear so many horror stories about people and their "modern" cars getting bled dry by dealer service departments it makes me afraid to ever get rid of my true and steady Mopar. The money just piles up in the bank when you own one of these gems; with additional savings to be gleaned from the fact that your life will be virtually date-free while you own it--but that's another topic and beyond the scope of this review.
General comments?
The car has gotten hilariously ugly over the years. The paint has mostly peeled off the upper regions, and the vinyl top has been reduced to grey whispy shreds that hang off the roof like some kind of halloween decoration. Still me and my steed won't be parting ways anytime soon. with the money I save not owning a modern car and not paying full coverage insurance I can enjoy many other luxuries that would otherwise be beyond my reach.
When it finally does explode I will scour the earth for another one.
