1987 Chrysler Fifth Avenue review from North America
"Old School > New School"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Bits of interior upholstery beginning to come loose.
Replaced a few dry rotted vacuum lines and break lines.
General comments?
Wow, this car makes you wish it was 1987 again. The suspension and steering are so soft and floaty, it feels like driving a boat. Which, let's face it, you are.
The 318 engine will never die. A thousand years from now, some scientist will dig up an old Fifth and be able to start it right off the bat.
The instrument panel and steering wheel have a very old-school feel to them, makes the car seem older than it really is.
It is kind of slow if you're trying to drive economically, but if you hit the gas just right the car gives you a gratifying jump foward.
For all your gearheads out there, the Fifth Avenue series of cars has a tremendous amount of mechanical upgrades you can preform with a little research, including 360 cubic inch engines, tougher rear axles, and even a conversion to a manual 4 speed!
In a nutshell, the Chrysler Fifth Avenue, like it's M body siblings, will last for years longer than many modern cars if treated right (Ford Windstar, I'm looking at you). It proves once again that you don't have to spend 10 grand to get a great car.
