2000 Chrysler Intrepid from North America - Comments

"Good value for size, comfort and handling"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The rear passenger door lock has now gone bad twice. The first time it was under the manufactures warranty. I have not corrected the second occurrence as of now. The lock makes a screaming noise when the door is locked by the driver or when the automatic lock operates at 5 mph. this is enough to startle those not expecting this to happen. Once locked the door cannot be automatically unlocked nor manually unlocked it requires both operations to unlock the door.

The air conditioner will blow very hot air when first started and when changing venting positions it seems to be a problem with the damper sticking after a period of up to one minute it corrects itself. Have not had it corrected, I would rather put up with the problem than shell out the money, this started the spring of 2005.

General comments?

I like the ride and the look of the car and buy US maufacturers now that I can afford to. When I was younger I purchased three new Toyota cars over the years with only one service issue. Wish my Dodge was as trouble free.

My 2000 Chrysler Intrepid has the same door lock problem on the back passenger side. It locks and I can't get it to unlock. I can't unlock in manual or electronically. It will cost $185.00 to fix it. If this is a manufacturer defect, it only seems fitting that they should have to pay to have it fixed.

I have a 99 Dodge Intrepid with the same problem... The doors will not unlock ELECTRICALLY or manually. First it was the back seat door on the drivers side. Now, it's the drivers door. The only way we can get into the drivers seat is to crawl over the console from the passenger side. Frustration!!

I've got the same problem with my Intrepid 2000... I already changed the passenger door lock and it cost 200$ only for the part... now I have two more door lock broken!!!

It's amazing... I go to an electrical garage to check this thing, and there are no problems with the electric system... so it is a defective part... I mean 3 defect parts on my car only!!!

For now I release the big steel fuse and it works manually until my wallet is a little bit more full for repairs.

The door lock 'screaming' is caused by a teeny tiny plastic gear stripping the teeny tiny teeth off of another plastic gear in the lock mechanism. This lock mechanism is not supposed to be a serviceable part, but I took it apart and was able to fix it at no cost. I've fixed two of them now, but they will inevitably fail again, along with all the rest of them. I don't know why Chrysler replaced the tried-and-true method of using a solenoid to operate electric locks with this cheap, flimsy, complex plastic mechanism incorporating an electric motor.

I have the 2000 Dodge Intrepid and my rear driver side lock just stop working. At least I can unlock it manually. So far so good on the other three. I definitely think this is a recall issue. Dodge let's do the right thing and help your loyal customers.

I just bought a 2000 Intrepid at an auction. Gorgeous looking, but now I'm starting to vibrate. Wondering if I made a good move? :-(
