1992 Chrysler LeBaron LX convertable review from North America

"A very comfy and reliable car on a long trip!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

When first purchased, the car had a number of small problems which I promptly corrected. Trans leak at the diff cover and pan. Coolant leak at the by-pass hose. Inop speedo, which was corrected with a vehicle speed sensor. Both rear windows inop due to defective motors (seems like a common problem).Brought all overdue maint. up to date: tune up, cap rotor & wires, air & fuel filters, PCV, O2 sensor, serpentine belt & tensioner, trans svc, 2 Ft struts & lower control/ball joint assemblies, complete exhaust system with a "Flomaster" in place of the stock muffler and an oil change. I changed the instrumentation from basic with "idiot light" and NO tach to a full gage with tach inst cluster. Replaced 1 AC gasket and charge the system. 4 new tires and 15" white spoke rims that came off my Daughters 90 GT coupe when we sold it. Last thing, a new conv top. Black top looks good on a white car, instead of the original white top.

General comments?

This is one of the smoothest driving/riding cars I have ever owned. Being fortunate enough to own 2 LeBaron "rag tops", I have noticed that both cars feel like 2 different models. The other is an 88 turbo automatic with a sport suspension. Both cars are as different as night and day. The 92 has a smooth luxury car ride and the 88 feels more like a sports car (due to the handling suspension package). Part and full throttle response are similar, but it ends there. The 88 feels more like my 88 Daytona, with the 92 feeling like a new Chrysler Sebring "rag top". With the differences in ride, it's hard to believe that both cars are the same model. Another big difference is fuel usage. The88 = 26mpg on hi way /the 92= 30mpg (most likely due to the 92's overdrive trans). The 92 is my wife's while the 88 is mine. She has stated that this is one of her favorites and the quickest cars she has ever owned. We have approx $2800 invested, which is less than the $3400 "Kelly blue book"value. I've seen comparable cars on used car lots for as much as $4995, so I feel that we got a good deal.
