I currently do not own one of these, but someone who I know, has owned the GT500 3 door version, GT and the GTI.
The GT500 is the LTD edition version with half leather recaro seats and is only made up to 1992.
The GT version was made upto 1993/94 the replace with GTI.
These cars are very fast and are/can be underestimated. They go from 0-60 in about 8/9 seconds and have a top spped of 110-120mph (standard-poss with the edition of an induction kit and exhaust)
They are cheap to run, have go-kart style handling and are cheapish to repair.
Although there are a lot of fast small hatches out there like the POLO GTI, GT and G40. The Saxo VTR/VTS, GOLF GTI, NOVA SR, SRI, GTE, GSI and Metro GTI etc, PUG 106 XSI etc. These are all fast hatches and all vary in performance and reliability marks. Even for its age the AX GTI will give some of the new hot hatches a run for their money, but will not necessarly beat them.
There are a lot of people out there who own these GT's and over rate them, to the extent where I read one story that a an AX GT with a few engine mods will eat a scoobie (subaru Impreza)?????
Anyways, there are great cheap little hot hatches that are will prefroem well.
Although some good examples are becoming harder to find due many of them being thrashed etc.
Good, fast reliable hot hatch that is often underrated and overrated!!!
Hi I'm currently looking at buying an L reg 1.1 are there any tips that you could give me about common problems and what to look out for with the car?
Thanks.
Go to youtube. Type in "AXO 16v". The AX here beats an Evo 5, and a Nissan Skyline R32 GTR. So, it's not so overrated.
I have one myself, and nothing will beat it in an autocross race.
