1988 Citroen BX 16 RS review from Sweden
"Comfort and originality"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Front viper broke down. Easy to fix tho.
Otherwise, nothing really went wrong with the car within the 500 km's I had it. However, there were a few problems when I bought it:
Three minor leaks in the hydraulic system. I fixed two of these, very easy, but got too lazy to fix the third one.
The car didn't start as easy as it should do, and drank a bit more gas then it should. But, needs to be said, it started every time, even tho it sometimes took a up to 10 seconds for it to do so.
General comments?
I bought this just to have it a over the summer, sold it a couple of weeks ago to invest in a Renault 19 16v instead. However, the BX was a very interesting experience. I'm glad I choosed it instead of the other cars in it's price range I looked at.
The BX, being one of the last "real" Citroën's, (one of the last models with the ultra comfortable hydralic system as an example of this statement), is really good value for the money.
As rumours says, this thing really is very comfortable, both for the passangers and the driver. For the price you pay for of these, you really do get ultrahigh comfort. Funny thing is that the faster you go, the more comfortable it feels!. I took this baby up to 150 KMH several times, and it really did feel like flying on a magic carpet sometimes, - however, you need to beware, if your Citroën doesn't feel this comfortable and smooth, there's something wrong with it - for real!
The handling is real good for the price, it has a tendency to understeer quite a lot, and can feel quite heavy in the front, (altho it really isn't), but it's as good as impossible to loose the tracktion with this car, belive me - I've tried!. This also makes this car fun to drive, altho my version only had 75 BHP.
The cabin feels quite plastic, and the quality of all the plastic isn't the best, makes quite a lot of funny noises all the time, but it's never a major problem, and I must say I've seen several cars with much more bad interior designs than the BX.
What made me sell this car was really the lack of power. 75 BHP felt enough round town, and, I must say, on the first and second gear, the BX felt real quick considering it's poor power, but for overtaking, it just wasn't enough. Felt like it took it forever to go from 100 KMH to 140 KMH, the acceleration you usually do at overtakings here in Sweden.
It's 75 BHP also made it feel quite noisy when reaching normal road/highway speeds (90 KMH +), actually, everything over 110 KMH was quite a pain, and a good sound system is probarly a must on long and fast journeys with this car - The engine/wind noise is simply too much.
I would actually love to own one of these again, but with a more powerful engine. I acutally drove a BX Turbo Diesel some weeks ago, and I would really like to own one of those - there's an engine that really lives up to this cars finer qualities!
