2001 Citroen C5 HDi from UK and Ireland - Comments

"A useful business tool spoiled by the inability of the dealer to resolve my problems"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The electrical contacts have corroded.

The fuel consumption is twenty five percent worse than is quoted in the sales literature. This is despite the dealer having had the car back for three days to sort the problem out.

The brakes squeal. I am advised by the dealer that this is a common problem with this model.

The rear wash wipe dribbles water most of the time.

The temperature sensor has had to be replaced.

General comments?

The Peugeot Citroen HDi engine has a good reputation, so much so that I chose to buy this car rather than another Passat. I do over 30,000 miles each year, and the failure by Citroen to solve the fuel consumption problem will cost me very dearly.

Can anyone advise me what legal action I can take against Citroen or the dealership?

My C5 had a massive amount of problems from new.

My dealer cured the brake squeal by drilling holes through the pads to let the dust escape, rather than clinging to the surface of the pad!

Early C5's were subject to a plethora of faults, Citroen responded to these by offering 'in service upgrades' (recalls which they don't tell you about unless you complain). On my car these included:

Front brake hose inclined to split

Problem after problem with the brakes

New rear suspension spheres to overcome handling problems

New timing belt tensioner as the plastic ones snap

New boot seal - the original design exited water into the boot if opened in the rain.

Replacement switch to cooling fan to stop the battery going flat.

New ECU unit to stop the horn going of intermittently.

I could go on - the car let me (and my wife) down on numerous occasions, breaking down on the motorway, locking or unlocking itself at will throughout the night.

Displaying bogus warning messages, etc, etc, etc.

Citroen refused to take the car back unless I bought another one!! - In the end I traded it at a massive loss, but I was so happy to see it go I didn't care. I would seriously advise against buying this car, huge discount or not, I can honestly say that in 20 years of motoring it was the biggest pile of crap I have had the displeasure to own.

My C5 1.8 2002 also has had a series of faults the garage has been slow to resolve.

Noisy suspension - took a year to resolve, (they even cleaned the brakes as a solution!), finally replaced defective track rod ends.

Boot hatch that won't stay up. I have to carry an old broom handle in the car to prop it up! Repeated complaints brought the reply that it's the spoiler making the boot too heavy, can't be fixed. After I was KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS by it this Xmas, I've been told the pistons ARE defective and will be replaced.

I've had the radio/player control pack in, external temperature sensor stick at 65F, doors that won't unlock, the car bobs up and down like a kangaroo when I leave it parked with the wheels turned, and those AWFUL squealing brakes!!

In two years I can't say I've had much pleasure driving the car.
