1999 Citroen Saxo VTR review from UK and Ireland

After 2 weeks the engine light popped up, but was only a few quid and an easy fit.

Key got stuck in ignition which turned out to be the lock barrel not actuating the steering lock. a lot of work to fix.

First time I drove this car I was obviously excited as 3grand had gone into this bit of kit. Excitement soon turned into joy as you realise this is a HOT HATCH.

I've got to admit though I would've plumbed for the VTS if insurance premiums weren't so punishing.

Back to the car then. Smooth engine as long as you warm it up for a good 5 minutes. Trust me, it's a different car when the engine is working with the oil at the right temperature. Gearbox is precise if abit stodgy, but it is french! Brakes are suprisingly soft, considering it's disks all round. Inside is tastefull, but as you'd expect, tight for space. Seats are supportive, but don't grip you.

Slating out of the way, this car is FUN! For what you pay you get sooo much. I've had experience with true performance cars (inc 1989 porsche 911 turbo, Mitsibushi GTO twin turbo and mk V Golf GTi) but nothing as fun as this. Due to the small wheels and quick steering it's easy to see why, but it's also so light. Only thing I've changed on mine is the exhaust, which was only 'cos mine had the outer layer eaten by rust. Wouldn't do anything else though (if you want a faster car, BUY A FASTER CAR!!) Have driven many modded saxo's inc. 1 with 18's, a bit of a pig to drive tho, almost to much grip for round town driving.

If you're thinking of getting one you already know what to expect. shop around, get a good deal and make the most of it. This car IS a modern day classic.
