Other than normal wear and tear only the crankshaft pulley which disintegrated at about 260,000 miles.
I have previously owned 2 of the earlier Mk1 versions of this car, both of which proved unreliable and were only tolerated because of their superb ride comfort and general refinement.
It is a pity that the earlier model gained such a bad reputation because the Mk2 version is a whole new ball game as far as reliability is concerned, but very few were sold because of the Mk1's bad press.
For a combination of space, comfort, ride, fuel economy and general refinement, there is no other used car in it's class for the price.
I entirely agree with the comments made above about the quality of these motors. My current everyday car is a '95 model 2.1 TD Estate with Auto 'box. My previous '95 model SX saloon was the same, but with less toys!
The quality of the Series 1 ('89-'93) models was ropey for about a year, but my first XM, a '92 SD-Turbo was a fantastic vehicle - quirky interior and larger turbo are sadly missed in the Series 2 cars.
After spending seven years employed as mechanic in a N,Ireland dealership, I became a great fan of Ctroen cars. after owning several ZXs I have recently purchased a 1996 2.1Td estate. the word quirky is perhaps over used, but it is sometimes difficult to think of another. this new car has 130,000 miles, has been sitting for 2 years, but runs superbly, it is hard to find any car as roomy, comfortable, smooth and well equiped, they are ace.
Further to my previous about 96 2.1 td estate. purchased for a bargain £60,after some recentuse apart from some slight sunroof leaks, we are still driving beautifully. only when insuring it did I pay attention to the model a smart vsx.
