1996 Dodge Caravan Sport review from North America
"Stay away from this car!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Replaced the transmission every year since we've had it (5 times total) you would think a 4 year old car with 76,000 (45,000miles) would still work pretty good, but we were wrong.. EVERYTHING has gone wrong with this van. Only the drivers side power window works, one of the sliding doors won't open, the hatchbatch never opens? the lock is stuck inside it apparently. Those little ugly orange daytime running lights burn out like twice a month, the air conditioning doesn't work, the back hatch is rusting pretty badly around the liscense plate. The back wiper works, but the washer doesn't spray out. The brake lights always burn out. The fog lights in the front don't work. Headlights are very very very dim. The thing eats front tires, and the brakes SUCK. Several times, on wet pavement, under normal Braking, (not slamming on the brakes) they have for no reason locked and made me skid to a stop.
General comments?
This van is horrible, we leased a new one in 1998 too and had similar problems so we turned it back in after a year. The dealer says that they are 'unaware' that transmission problems are widespread in the caravan. If you ask ANYONE who has owned a carvan, especially 1996-2000 model years, they will have replaced the tranmission AT LEAST once.
