I have a 2001 Durango and it ROCKS!!! I bought it new and have 117K miles on her. The only problems I have had is replacing the battery and brakes until this month. This month I had to replace some kind of harness and TPS due to RPM fluctuation's. They also had to clean the throttle body and flush the injector service. Now when I stomp on the gas she accelerates like she used to. Love my 01' Durango. I don't like the way the new Durangos look.
On 8-8-07 we bought a used 2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4X4 with 56,000 miles on it because my wife's car was stolen 3 weeks ago. Yesterday we had the tranny flushed, oil changed, a/c checked (with 1 can of freon put in), and a K&N air filter installed. I knew when I bought it needed a front end alignment, which is being done on Tuesday. I found the fan clutch isn't working correctly and causes the car to get hot when it sits idling for 5-10 min. So now I'll probably buy an electric fan to cool the a/c and engine. I haven't gotten to play with the 4x4 unit yet, to really see how well it works. I do know the back door locks are frustrating me; they lock and unlock intermittently. I've read about the recall on the ball joints and other stuff, and some rather nasty comments from owners of the Durango that said they have had serious problems with theirs; I just hope that we don't. Any info would be helpful, thanks.
I have had a 2001 Dodge Durango since 2003 and other than the regular servicing and transmission flushes, I probably only have spent an average of $800 a year in repairs. When I bought it, it had only done 79,000 And now at 225,000 I'm still happy, even though I know the repair costs will go up over coming years and am driving about 180 a day! THE BEST VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED!
Reading through these, I obviously need advice on buying my next car.
The 2001 Dodge Durago I bought had 68K KM when I bought it just two years ago. Now, with no reason to disbelieve the recorded KMs as the car was in outstanding condition and ran beautifully, how should I have detected at that point that in the next two years I would replace Transmission, A/C Compressor, A/C Fan, Steering rack, Brake Servo, Brake Drums. I don't use this car off road, and actually I drive less than 20 miles / day. Face up to it, the product is very poor quality, and anyone who has one has my sympathy, and I offer these words of advice - get rid of it before it injures you in an accident or fire - it's nothing, but a death trap, and I would quite happily repeat this in a court of law should anyone invite me.
My 2001 Durango revs high (1500+ rpm) for no reason. Dealer can't find the problem. Replaced EDAC? Shows no code problems. Any ideas?

I bought my 2001 Durango new from the factory and have maintained it exactly as described by the owners manual. All work has been done by the local Dodge dealer, and as of today 09/13, 2008, the truck has 67K miles on it.
So far I've had to do the following normal things: Replaced both oxygen sensors, belt, battery, plugs, wires, coil, cap, tires, and replaced the rear tail/stop lights as they burn out.
The truck has had the following non-normal issues:
1) 2 new sets of front brake rotors/pads due to premature wearout
2) Upper ball joints popping (recall)
3) Drivers window motor mechanism failure
4) The trailer running light wire is shorted to chassis from the factory.
Within the last four months the truck has developed the following issues:
1) Pops out of Park by itself
2) Steering wheel mounted radio controls no longer function but cruise control does.
3) Service engine soon light is now on
4) Service 4X4 light is now on
5) Surges at 65 mph like its dropping in/out of lock up
6) Gas cap lanyard broke off
7) AC is not blowing cold anymore.
I'm taking it to the dealer again next week, and I'm waiting for the tranny to blow up any minute as they all do.
OK... I have a potential answer for those of you experiencing blown tail lights and dash lights on 1998 - 2003 Durangos. Fuse# 4 will blow and replacing it works until you hit a bump or turn or start from a stoplight.
I traced the problem to a short in the rear license plate light wire assembly. It turns out my spare tire was not tightened up completely. As a result, it would swing slightly and crush this wire harness against the frame of the Durango. As a result, the wire core was exposed and would short out the related lights.
Let me know if this helps you out!
Durango Electrical Fire? I have a 2001 Dodge Durango that we purchased in Dec 08. The lights went out behind the dashboard. For the speedometer etc. Anyway I replaced the fuse with the proper fuse. And then again it did the same thing. I replaced the fuse once more. Later on I had kids in the truck and while I was waiting for my friend to come out to the car I turned it off cause I smelled a burning smell, then within a minute the front light caught fire, and was getting large. I had to hurry up and climb through the truck getting out small children. Needless to say I have had very expensive repairs to the vehicle. And some kids that are terrified to get into a car now. Also I have read other stories online where the lights would flicker or turn off and then a light will catch fire. Not sure why this is not a recall yet? Any have any suggestions of what I can do I still have a short in my cluster that powers the dash and am curious about dodge being responsible for repairs there is no current recall. If so please contact me at MarcellaMurray27@yahoo.com.
I bought a 2001 Durango SLT Plus 4.7 liter about six months ago. I have had some good things and some not so good experiences with it.
The good include the power that the engine pushes out. When I heard it had a V8, I was kind of worried about gas mileage since it replaced my 94 Jetta, but it's surprisingly good with mileage even with living in Washington DC (city driving as well as freeway).
I have however had a problem with it overheating on me. When it first happened I replaced the thermostat. It solved the issue for a few weeks and it started happening again. Then I replaced the fan clutch. Did the job for around a month and now it overheats again even if I'm on the freeway going 55 mph with the heat on full blast. The coolant bottle is full as well. I read in the manual that the radiator needs to be cleaned periodically, but being an 8 year old truck who knows if it was done by the previous owner... Could someone give me some pointers here so I don't do any more damage?
