2004 Dodge Grand Caravan SE review from North America
"Great car and design, but shabby workmanship"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
At 19k miles noise from front suspension. Warranty repair:excessive play in stab. link/bushing worn; front end ball sockets lose. Replaced bushing, stab. link. Also rubbing noise when steering wheel turned. Warranty repair: install mini finned cooler unit under car. Basically a small rad. to cool power steering fluid that gets too hot as lines cross engine. Told not a recall item, but fixed if customer complaint. Told design problem. At 31,331 miles. Rattle in front. Warranty repair: replace outer tie-rod ends. Same steering rubbing noise again. Warranty repair: replaced entire steering rack. The thought as explained was rack was damaged before the mini rad was installed. Also told by dealer that front brake pads worn and needed replaced. I saw them and yes. But I am easy on brakes and most miles over the road. I paid $90 for pads and resurface of rotors. At34K again power steering rubbing noise. Warranty repair: replace rubber hose and hose clamps. Told when steering rack was replaced that dealer was not authorized to spend (a few bucks) to use new rubber hose and new hose clamps. I would have paid for those had Known. At 36,440 miles coolant leak on garage floor. Warranty repair entire new water pump as seal on shaft was leaking. I had coolant flushed and replaced per dealer recommendation at the 34K time cited above. At 40,418 rattled and clicking when going from park to reverse or drive, and again rubbing sound. Warranty repair was to installed left front trans axle assembly. For both this and the water pump I had to paid the $100 deductible on the drive train warranty. Nice car to drive and great with the stow and go seats. But the engine oil is black by 1800 miles. Told that this is not a problem by dealer. My daughter's l999 grand caravan with 79k plus miles never had anything like mine and her oil is relatively clean at 4500 miles. Too bad such nice vehicle has so many problems so early in its life. I for sure will be rid of it prior to the ending of the 6 yr or 60k power train warranty. I just can't trust to luck, and between now and then if the past is a model more will be needed.
