1996 Dodge Grand Caravan LE review from North America
"Great buy for the money"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I had to replace a cracked power steering fluid reservoir that I did myself ($15).
The rear brakes needed replacing (I think it was the first time they were replaced), and it had around 125,000 miles. Had to replace both drums too, but replacing brakes are to be expected.
I broke a stud as I was rotating the tires.
The multi-function switch (wiper/blinker switch) needs to be replaced as the wipers go crazy sometimes.
The radio is getting finicky as I push scan down and it either goes up or changes to AM (I have the infinity sound system). Also when I push a pre-set button sometimes it goes to the one next to it instead of the one I pushed.
Also the two lights above the driver/front pass don't turn on when you open the doors or turn on all of the interior lights (but I prefer that as the lights aren't in my eyes as I'm driving down the road, but some might not like it).
I'll get around to replacing the switch and radio when they get really bad.
General comments?
I was a college student, married with one girl and was always traveling with 1-2 other people on long trips, so we were always squished and the corolla wasn't that comfortable for these long trips. I saw the van and grabbed it. It came into the dealership with sales thinking that it needed new fuel injectors so they didn't pay very much for the trade. It ended up being bad fuel, so I got a dang good deal for the thing.
It's a lot quieter and more comfortable than the corolla. I like how the seats are higher so it seems like you're not sitting on the floor. I also like how because you're higher up you don't have everyone's lights in your face as much when you're driving at night.
Taking the benches out are easy with the rollers, but they are a bit heavy if you're doing it by your self, but it can be done. The roof rack comes in handy for hauling a canoe around.
Performance and handling is pretty good and the ABS system comes in handy here in eastern Idaho where it's icy 8 months out of the year. The brakes takes a bit more leg muscle than probably other vehicles. As far as gas mileage goes I get around 15 city, 22 freeway (75+ mph), 26 highway (55 mph)
