1994 Dodge Grand Caravan LE review from North America

"Glad I bought it- very impressed"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

An electrical fault caused the engine to shut off when coming to a stop. This was fixed by the dealership at no charge.

The air conditioning does not blow cold. To be expected for a vehicle of this age.

The front suspension makes a clunking/ knocking sound when making low-speed manoeuvres. Apparently this is common.

The rear wiper and washer do not work.

General comments?

I purchased this van in a hurry as I needed a vehicle having just moved to a new city. I was looking for nothing in particular, and a dealer showed me this Caravan which had reasonable kilometres for its age.

I was initially skeptical of the reliability the van would offer (being my first American-built car), but after owning it for a period of time I must say that I am blown away by this vehicle! It does everything you ask it to do and more.

I have done several long road trips in this van so far, and it has not let me down at all. I am impressed with the various power features on my example too- the display showing the compass, outside temperature, fuel economy etc is a welcome addition that I did not expect. It also came with power driver's seat, and power windows.

The audio system is great, however you have to lean right forward to adjust the stereo or A/C controls.

The inside of the Grand Caravan could comfortably seat seven. I do not require the rear seats very often, but they are reasonably easy to remove (however you will need an extra person to help).

The motor and transmission are a good combination. Despite being a 'traditionally' designed push-rod engine, it is whisper quiet at idle and offers a smooth power delivery. Sometimes I have to check the gauges to make sure the engine is still running. It's that quiet.

I wish the van could achieve better fuel economy than 19.7 MPG. It's OK for a vehicle of this shape, but I read the new Caravans are no better despite being much more aerodynamically designed.

I also would like the driver's seat base to be able to be shifted further back. On long trips the driving position makes it easy for your legs to fall asleep.

All in all the Grand Caravan has exceeded every one my expectations so far. I had the intention of simply trading it in once I no longer required it, but now I am seriously considering keeping this van long term.

Based on this experience, I would definitely buy another. A great buy provided you find a good one!
