My Dodge Intrepid has a 2.7L engine that just blew.
Yesterday afternoon at 113,000 miles. It started
making a knocking noise two days before. My car
never gave any prior warnings.
I loved the space my Intrepid provided.
My 2000 Intrepid has never gavin me problems,
until now. I wished that I would have known
about this site earlier. If I'd known what I know.
now, I'd probably be in a better situation. Please
add me to the class action lawsuit. My email is:

I agree with all about this crap car. I had mine for about 3 years and had no major problems until the engine light came on a few months ago. I took the car to be checked and the dealer said the reading of the test was that air was coming in somewhere. This would cause you no problems and would be hard to fix so don't worry about it.
The next thing I know was I heard a knocking sound or a rattling noise under the hood, but the car started and ran fine. About 5 days later the engine went. The dealer knew then what was about to happen. He figured hold off on this car for a little while cause anyday and wham-o.
I advise don't buy a used dodge nothing, or a new one at that. I think we need to stand together and bring a class action suit, cause I am sure no other car has had as many engine repairs needed.
Not all Dodges are bad. I agree fully that the 2.7 liter engine is junk-Do NOT buy any vehicle that has this engine in it-it has major reliability issues to say the least. But don't say that all Dodges are bad because of this experience. I currently own 2 Dodge products that are both very good vehicles. A Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.3 liter V6 in it with 180,000 miles and still counting, and also a Dodge Spirit with the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder in it with 108,000 miles on it. Both are holding up very well with only general maintenance having to be done. I have owned other Chrysler products before these as well and they have all served me well. The important thing to do is to use all available tools and do your homework before you buy. Use this website or something Consumer Reports-if you so choose. If a car you are interested in has lots of complaints about major issues such as engine problems, stay away from it and you will do OK with Dodge or Chevy or whatever brand you choose to buy. All brands have their good and bad-the trick is to know which is which.
The number one reason these 2.7 liter engines "blow up" is due to a lack of maintenance. The owners of these cars are typically less than vigilant about their oil changes and the result is sludge, plugged up oil galleries, and in the end, a seized up engine.
True, some engine designs are more "resistant" to neglect than others, but in the end, a regular oil change is pretty cheap insurance.
I bought my 2000 in 2003. By 2005 it needed it's second engine at 80k. That was okay though because it was covered under the warranty. In 2006 it was needing it's third engine. I had to pay out of pocket for that one. Now I am paying on the original amount I bought the car for. I couldn't even get a trade-in amount that would keep from going upside down. Very unhappy with the problems, but still love the style.
I bought a 2000 Dodge Intrepid new in 2000. It now has approximately 108,000 miles. I have never had any problems until last week. It died in the middle of a busy road. The engine was also smoking. The temperature gauge was normal, so it was not over-heating. I have just learned that the problem is the water pump and it might have affected the engine. Labor alone will be over $500.
My 2000 Dodge Intrepid just blew two Rod Bearings and the Chain in the front Crank Case cut all the through the metal after 81,000 miles and 6 years of owning the vehicle. The problem all started when I had to have my seat replaced via the seat recall Dodge issued (which the dealership did not notify me about, I had to find this out myself via the internet). So, I took my 2000 Dodge Intrepid into my local dealership, to have the seat replaced and while they were at it, I authorized some other repairs that needed to be done to my Intrepid (all out of warranty). I get the car back a day or two later, drive it off the lot and start to hear a “knocking” sound when the RPM’s would hit around 4000 – 5000 RPM’s. The “knocking” went on for another day or two without clearing up, so I took my 200 Dodge Intrepid back to dealership to find out what the deal was, since they just serviced my vehicle. The dealership told me that I would have to pay them another $380.00 to have my engine pulled apart to diagnose the problem. I was very upset about this, but gave them permission to do pull the engine apart to fix the problem, figuring this would all be covered by their 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty they provide on their work/repairs they do. I get a call 2 – 3 hours later stating that the news is not good and that my 2000 Dodge Intrepid had two blown Rod Bearings, as well as the Chain had cut all the way through the Crank Case. The dealership blamed this on being poorly maintained, then when I told them that was not accurate, as I was very religious on changing my oil every 3,000 miles, they tried to blame the problem on Oil Sludge caused by the Oil I was using (Pennzoil). I asked Dodge how Pennzoil would feel if I told them that Dodge was telling their customer’s that Pennzoil Oil caused Oil Sludge and the dealership had no comment. They also didn’t have any comment on why other engines run & last using Pennzoil Oil and their engines do not, still no good answer from them. I have since, contacted my attorney and am pursuing a law suite against my local Dodge Dealer, as well as complained to their Corporate Office (1-800-992-1997 or www.dodge.com) and have filed a complaint with the BBB (www.bbb.org). I advise everyone that has ran into this same issue to do the same, this is a Lemon Engine and all consumers should be made aware of this awful design for this 2.7L V6 in the 2000 Dodge Intrepid, DON’T BUY THIS CAR!!!
I own a Dodge Intrepid. I have recently taken the my car in for its 3000 mile check up. I heard a knocking noise that just started a couple days prior todeciding to change the oil change. So I figured that while the oil was getting changed the mechanic could investigate the knocking. When I went to pick the car up the mechanic refused to change the oil and stating that he could not do so. He explained that the particular car had a recall on certain parts that should have been replaced. I have never been contacted with this information. I was told that the car could not be driven over 2000 RPM's if it did it would should the rod bearing straight through the motor. I have read several comments and I will send a letter to the BBB & Dodge in hope that the would make good on a product that they say the stand behind. I like most comment read never had a days problem except for about two years ago had some minor work done to the car. Never once while being repair was I approached with the recall. I would like to be included in any class action suit against Chrysler Dodge. I feel that they knew the problem existed and overlooked letting me know the problem. I wanted a dependable car to cart kids back and forth to events, school.
I have owed this car for about 4 years with 97,000. mile on it.
My name is Ricco. I just bought the 2002 Dodge Intrepid (SE), and there is a knocking noise under my right passenger tire. I've taken this car to the dealer several times with no help. I also had the check engine light come on a week after I had the bought the car! I had no problems outta my 1982 Chevy.
Please include me in your class lawsuit, I live in Martinsburg, wv 25401. Please contact me 304-820-5245 or 304-263-8484.
I am in the Bahamas and I own a 2000 Intrepid. If given the opportunity again, I would not purchase an Intrepid.
My car gave me problems within the second year of owning this vehicle. Can you imagine the amount of cash I have put into this car? The prices for parts are almost twice the price as in the USA, and the labour the same.
My first problem was the car jumped timing and bent 6 valves. I repaired that.
Second, the water pump went, repaired that.
Now my car is parked up because it is knocking.
Would I purchase another Dodge vehicle? YES in a heart beat, but not an Intrepid.
My question to the DODGE dealers is will I be compensated in anyway for this? My suggestion to you is to PLEASE try to deal with problem. We are customers just unsatisfied in this situation. THANK YOU for taking the time out to read this. PLEASE write back to www.bain_boy@hotmail.com
My name is Terrence and I have a 2000 Dodge. I live in Philly and that car is a piece of junk. I also own a 91 Volvo 940se turbo. I had to be out my right mind to try and sell my Volvo to get that Dodge fixed. That 2.7 motor is junk. I have 89.000 miles on it and the motor is knocking like the police. The push rods went, the rocker arms. They knew what they were doing when they put those junk motors in there.
Please add me to your law suit. Some things need to be done about this. Times are too hard for people to be going out buying new or used cars. So do yourself a favor, stay away from Dodge. It has a nice body and stuff, but that's about all. email me back at renovo72@ aol. com for any question. Peace out.
