"Stay Away From This Vehicle"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I purchased my 2001 Dodge Intrepid from a used car dealership that I had dealt with in the past and had a good relationship with the company. My problems started at 58,000 miles and unfortunately I was 4 hours away from home when the engine went out. I was informed that it could cost me up to $6000 for a new engine. I religiously changed the oil in the car and I was informed that my engine was junk because the timing had slipped. The 2.7 Liter engine was made with what is called of all absurdities a "different" type of timing chain. Basically, if your timing goes out your engine is junk. I had the dearlership where I purchased the car replace the engine for $2800 with a used engine that had 30,000 miles on it. After the engine was replaced, I have had the car numerous times to the local Dodge dealership to replace many emission system related issues. For example, I had just paid $200 last month to have a part replaced and on the next month the engine light returned on again. The dealership is replacing this latest item for me for free and I am waiting for the return of my car as I am writing this review. The dealership informed me that at this point they were going to charge me for any more parts that they replace because everything has been replaced in the entire emission system. The dealership has a leg to stand on with this issue because they know that I had another engine put into this vehicle. This car is like a nightmare that never ends. I never even drive the vehicle that often since I had the engine replaced. I do believe that there should be a class action suit brought against Dodge as I have heard many of the same stories from other consumers. I should have walked away from the car when the engine went out because I probably would have been further ahead. Sad part is, I still owe on the car and pay full coverage insurance on a vehicle that I hardly ever drive. This is the first time that I ever paid a lot of money for a newer model car and I will never do it again. I will have the car paid off in a year or two. I have a 1995 Chevy Cavalier that I bought for $300 that is my work car that I drive every day and I trust it more than my Dodge.

General comments?

I will never purchase another Dodge.

I would say Dodge purchasing a Dodge vehicle.

I wouldn't give this car to my worst enemy.

Try taking a Dodge SE Intrepid in for trade in on another vehicle and see what the dealership offers you and that will tell you what other's know about the car.

I own a 2001 INTREPID with a 2.7 liter engine. It has 123.000 miles and still no problem.

It's true. I recently bought a 2001 Dodge Intrepid SE from a dealership close to my house. I bought it in August of 2006 and when I bought it, it had 81,000 miles on it. So one day while riding in September, I heard a knocking noise in my engine. I had it towed to a local Dodge dealer only to find that I needed a new engine. So, I tried to go back to the dealership where I bought my car and they told me that there was nothing that they could do about it. So in the end I had to pay $4500.00 to have a new engine put in my car.

I got my car back in November, and it has been running well ever since.

I have had my 2001 Dodge Intrepid for 4yrs. Love it even when it got wrecked I fought to have it fixed cause it was a great car that was 8 mos. ago. I got the oil changed the other day with 115,000 miles on it and the next day it sounds so bad that I thought it was going to blow up on me I called my mechanic he said bring it in. Said it was the timing chain and or hydraulic tensioner and then said he was to small of a business to fix it took it to the local Dealership the only one in 55 miles and was told the same thing and it will cost $1200 to fix it and both places have 2 cars each in the back lot that had the same problem and did not get fixed in time. I have a family of 5 in a rual community with a 3 seater truck now. Until I can get this fixed, but if there are 4cars in two of the buisnesses in a town of 6500 people there is a big problem with this where do we go to get help if dodge knows there is a problem with the design of this engine?

I understand that these cars are like this, but it cracks me up when people complain about their cars having problems when they have over 115,000 miles on them. DUH!

I bought a Dodge Intrepid SE in 2003, with 20,000 miles on it. 4 and a half years later, I have run it to death. I put 100,000 miles on it in those 4 years. Its now at almost 122,000. It is still running great. I had to have a new alternator put in it. Brakes lasted 95,000 miles; unbelievable! Only other expenses have been a new battery and headlights. This is an unbelievable car. I will own another Dodge when I finally trade this one in.

I have had my Intrepid all of six months, I first bought it with 58,000 miles on. I had it 3 weeks and the motor went out. Well we got that fixed even though it cost us $4500.00. it took 2 months to fix and I've only driven it for the last 3 months, with a new motor, and this morning the same thing happend. This new motor only has 3,000 miles on it. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!!

I purchased my 2001 Dodge Intrepid in March of 2002. Never had any problems with the car until I hit 94,000. Engine went out with no warning. Thankfully I had purchased the extended warranty and the engine was replaced. Well another 93,000 miles later the same thing happened leaving me stranded 200 miles from home. I have taken very good care of this care maintenance wise. I replaced the engine again with a used engine and it didn't last another 2000 miles. WARNING: BAD OIL PUMP. I found that out when the third engine went out and the part was never recalled by Dodge although they are aware of the problem they feel they are not responsible. NEVER buy a Dodge!! I unfortunately still have the car, it has been sitting in my driveway for two years. I still owe on it and I have to carry full coverage since there is still a loan on it. Hopefully a class action law suit comes about.

This car sucks. It isn't worth a dime. You could not give me this car for free. I still owe 4500 on my boat anchor.

I don't know what the deal is. I bought my 2001 dodge intrepid SE about eight months ago from the guy down the street. It only had 65,000 miles on it and now has almost 80,000 and runs like a dream. And to tell the truth I don't take care of it like I should and not the first problem. I even wrecked it about 5 months ago I hit some trees causing 4,300 dollars in front end damage and still it runs perfect. I think it's a great car and I am now a firm dodge lover.

I own a 2001 Dodge Intrepid.

At 20000 miles a new motor was put in.

At 40000 miles (20000 on new motor), a new timing chain was put in.

Now at 70000 miles the timing chain is out again.

The Dodge dealer I always buy my cars from told me to get rid of it. He said these motors are a problem.

I put a new timing chain on it and now they say the valves are bent from the timing chain slipping. Only 50000 on the new motor.

I will not buy any more Dodge products. I have checked and they know they have a problem with this engine, and will not make it right with consumers.

To the guy who "cracks up" when people complain about major faults on cars with over 115K miles on them...

Ford, GM, Mazda, Honda and Toyota (among others) don't have problems making modern vehicles that go well beyond 100,000 miles with no serious repair requirements other than regular maintenance.

Whereas, anyone unlucky enough to own a Chrysler product with a 2.7 liter engine has reason to celebrate if they can even get the car to 100,000 miles without a sludged-up engine and $5000+ repair bills for a new engine.

Comparing Chrysler 2.7L cars to the competition isn't difficult, and it's not the competition who comes out waving the white flag...

I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid. All the complaints here are real. I just have been told today that I need to find $4500 for a new engine because the sludge caused the timing chain and water pump to dissolve, fry, bake, crack and generally killed the engine. I am now zero for 2 on Dodge products. STAY AWAY (and I always buy American... as in Ford or GM from now on)

I truly agree, as we did join the Intrepid club... the last one (1994 3.3L) lasted 185k miles with enough wrong with it that the charity didn't want it.

My other cars are 2000 & 2002 Maximas, love them dearly, with 154k on the clock it still gives the same thrills on the highway.

Just a little side note for the comment above, in case you haven't noticed... the Big Three have their cars made in Canada and Mexico, (i.e. they are not "American").

(Not to support Honda but...) the Accord is manufactured in US since the early 80's, and has shown great success and far better reliability.

My intrepid is now stuck in first gear and won't shift, remedy: replace some tranny sensor.

Cause : Rain (Go figure!!)

Needless to say, I get chills thinking what it would cost, once done the car is getting a brand spanking new "For Sale" sticker.

2.7 Piece of junk. I have to say though, I managed to get 120,000 out of it before the engine blew. I was reduced to selling it for scrap, $200. Priceless.
