2.7L engine is a joke!! I had my 2001 Intrepid for 6 years... less than 70,000 miles on it... serviced like clock work and very well taken care of... and the engine blew on the interstate in a different state that I live in while I was on my way the the airport for a relaxing vacation!!! I had to pay a lot of $$ to have the car towed home.
I was told $4,500 to fix it and that is with a used engine - not even new... which was equal to or more than I would have gotten for a trade in had it been running! I ended up getting $500 as a trade... but they towed it away for free! Thankfully I had it paid off - but what a waste!
I really feel like something should be done - lawsuit perhaps - to get some kind of compensation for the money lost... not only to me - but everyone else whose engine blew up. The mechanic said "oh, it's a 2.7 - that happens to these... they were manufactured wrong... and you don't know if you got one until it blows"
This really floors me. I have a 2001 Chrysler Intrepid. (Canadian version). It has 130,000 miles on it, and the only things I've replaced are a starter, and the oil pressure switch. It doesn't leak or burn oil.
I will need to replace a power steering pump soon, which is par for the course on a car that's 8 years old with 130,000 miles on it.
I am not saying that I am the biggest Chrysler fan in the world, but it has never given me a problem (knock on wood). I have owned multiple Chrysler products with the same results.
110000 miles on my trep, all original and still going strong... take care of your car and it will take care of you!!!
Im laughing at the person that says he is enjoying his Nissan Maximas that are problem free... Lets take a look at those reviews, shall we?
Hi to everyone. I have a 2001 Intrepid with a 3.2 liter. I have 190,000 miles on it and have not done anything, but normal maintenance. It is still running strong and doesn't use any oil. I wish that Dodge still made them...
Dennis.
I have a 2000 Dodge Intrepid ES with a 3.2L engine. This car has almost 200K miles on it, and it runs strong. I never worry about it starting or driving and have as much faith in it the day it was new. My only regret is that I bought the car new and paid over $20K for it in 2000. I should have bought it used, as the resale is so horrible.
Besides the car being such a great car, a major reason for me not driving a newer car is that I could not bear to part with it for its market value. The car is worth so much more to me than what I could sell it for to get a newer one.
I am a single mother on disability, living in a rural area. I needed a reliable vehicle, and someone recommended the 2001 Dodge/Chrysler Intrepid 2.7L engine. Mileage was around 48kms when I purchased it.
The week after my 90 days warranty period expired, my car experienced major problems. Left me stranded on the side of the road, expensive tow bill and repair bill!
I am not done paying this car off yet, and the head needs replacement, as well as having a cracked manifold. This car burns oil like crazy, yet there is no black smoke coming out the tailpipe. I have NO idea where the oil goes, it just does! The A/C quit on the hottest day of the year, the shocks went, the starter quit, it burns through fuses like there's no tomorrow. The antifreeze all leaked out on me about 10 kms from home, and the gauge never moved an inch to indicate there was a problem.
I have had this car towed 3 times in the 2 years I've owned it.
I now need a new car, and cannot afford to buy one, due to the fact I still owe $3500.00 on this lovely-to-look-at car. I don't know what I will do for a vehicle. This is the 3rd Dodge/Chrysler product I have owned in my life, and it will be the last. Honda, here I come (once I have figured out where to get the $$$$ from).
I agree with the others' opinions, in that a Class Action Suit should be filed against Chrysler.
One more thing - when I called the dealership for servicing, I could not get an appointment for 4-6 weeks -- at EVERY Dodge/Chrysler dealership I phoned. What does that tell you? Never again!
