1997 Dodge Neon review from North America
"What a trooper!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The car was owned by an old lady, then it got stolen and she got scared and sold it. There was some damage to the key surround thingy, but that's about it.
Was broken into and my stereo got stolen. I got a new stereo, but since the thief entered through the driver side door with a wire and the window was pulled out (its frameless) it does not seal properly at the top due to a bent bracket in the door. It's like the car was designed to be stolen, with the frameless doors and the shape of the interior door locks, and the ignition that can be jacked with a screwdriver.
The brake lines rusted out in some junction thing, and I was going about 120kmh when they blew out. That was some crazy stuff, but all good, nobody was hurt.
Interior air vent plastic wing broke when I tried to connect an air freshener thing to it.
Water leaked into my doors and damaged my speakers. (I found this when I was changing them, the speakers were all water damaged.
General comments?
This car is a trooper. I drive it everywhere almost every day and it just keeps going. It's cheap on gas (29/39mpg) and the power is good enough to keep up, it really rips it when you gun it, but not much mid range power in higher gears.
Fun as hell in the winter. I have mine equipped with winter tires and this is a blast to drive in the snow. There are no annoying driving aids (TCS, ABS) and with controlled use of the e-brake this thing glides around corners like that's what it was made to do. Fun stuff!
The quality of interior is straight up crap. Hard ugly plastic everywhere. Steering wheel is ugly and way too big, and is too close to the door on the left side. Door panels do not line up properly, nor does any other panel on the car.
This thing sounds like a diesel when it's cold and warming up. Weird!
There is no RPM gauge, which is super lame.
This is all pretty nitpicky stuff, but overall this is a good car. It is solid, reliable, dirt cheap to maintain/fix.
