I just bought a 2001 Dodge Ram that someone brought in as a trade in. It only had 19000 miles on when I purchased it. I have only had it 5 months and have already replaced the brakes and my engine will cut out sometimes. I will step on the gas and get a muffled back fire sound. Also the cruise control revs and sometimes seems to turn itself off. I will be traveling and all of a sudden start slowing down and have to reset it. I am more worried about the dying, since it has done it twice on the highway!!! After reading all the comments, I am sure that I am in for a real RIDE!

I own a 2001 Ram 4x4 Quad Cab Short bed, and have never had any problems till 35,889 miles. Just a week before that I said I would let the warranty go because this is my second truck, and third dodge (own a Durango to) with no problems ever!!! The check engine light comes on at 35,889 miles...2 hours later and a diagnostics check my Transmission is being Rebuilt. They said it was slipping and not shifting within the RPM range it should. So now I have the exstended warranty at $1800 extra bucks, and new Tranny.

I purchased a 2001 Dodge 1500 5.2L in Mar 2001 (new). After a couple of years the only complaint I have about the truck is the pulling power... or should I say the lack thereof. I have pulled several light trailers (from 6 to 12 ft. relatively lightly loaded) and the truck seems to just lug along. I have to take it out of overdrive until hit speeds of at least 60 just to keep the engine from knocking and lugging. I now have 52,000 miles. on the truck and am babying it to hopefully keep the tranny in working order. I have never been disappointed with the looks or ride quality. The power is the only complaint I have even when not pulling a load.

I have a 2001 Ram 2500 diesel with automatic trans. I bought this new and have been having transmission problems from 5000 miles. At first the dealer seemed cooperative. They replaced sensors, adjusted the throttle body, and replaced the torque converter. No positive results. Now they want nothing to do with my truck. The problem is the trans tries to shift when pulling a trailer, but can't seem to find the gear. It slams back and forth between Drive and 2nd. It also sounds like it is slipping when not pulling a trailer. My wife has a Durango. We've had to replace major steering components on it. We'll never buy another Chrysler product.

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram Quad Cab with the 5.3 liter. At 36,398 miles & with absolutely no problems (till now) the check engine light came on. Well, I am not the most mechanically inclined individual in the world, but I can do some things under a hood. I checked the fluids, all OK. I checked the battery terminals. Crud build up all over both of them. Well, I cleaned them off with some battery terminal cleaner and a battery brush and hooked the battery back up. The check engine light went off. Until 6 days later when the blasted thing came back on. The engine has power when I need it (I don't pull anything). The oil is changed regularly and other preventative maintenance is done as needed. The truck was bought used in 2003 and has been a pleasure until this. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions as to what it could be? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Wow,

I have a 2001 quad cab also. Bought it with 17000 miles on it. Now at 29000, It has been at the shop for over a month now with a total of three breakdownes concerning the trany. Its in the shop as I speak. I agree with you all about the great looks. I have spent well over 1000 between rentals and deductibles. It is such a shame owing 20000 on a vehicle knowing it will need to be traded in very soon. I am shocked the gov has allowed dodge to take advantage of the consumer to this extent and shame on the banks that give the money to purchase these lemons. All I have to say is 5 star my BUTT!

I have owned two Dodge trucks. The first was a 98 Ram 4x4 and at 60K miles the transmission went bad. $2,500 later I traded it for a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500, 4X4, 5.2 v-8. I bought the 2001 thinking the 98 was just a lemon and the transmission problem had something to do with that particular year. Now with 37K miles the 2001 transmission will not down shift unless I stomp the gas pedal to the floor. I'm afraid it is the start of a long expensive problem. If anyone has the fix to this problem, please let us Dodge owners know. I should not have bought another Dodge and will not again in the future.

I have taken my 2001 dodge truck to two different dealer in the Las Vegas area for transmission problems. The vehicle was under warranty and the transmission was supposed to have been checked by the dealer at the first location, however this dealer could not find anything wrong with the transmission. I explained that there had to be something wrong with this transmission in order for it to be acting up and running this way. (on take off, the transmission would lock up, start to accelerate and the truck would down shift at approximately 45 miles per hour.) I have taken it to the second dodge dealer by recommendation of dodge, this is understandable.) I took the pickup into the second dealer and it was supposed to have been checked out, test were supposed to have been ran and come to find out it was driven to the shop and eight days later found out that the transmission had to be broken down in order to find the problem, there was no test taken on this transmission. Now I'm still waiting in order to get this out of the shop and a rental vehicle is still costing me. The vehicle is out of warranty now, and it appears that I'm stuck with the bill.

I bought my truck off the lot, while in Florida, and have put 70K+ miles on it here in Michigan with NO problems. The original tires are due for replacement, but, other than that, the truck has been a champ. I do now have a small problem. The cruise control won't engage and the MIL is on. Autozone cleared the code once and said it was a gross leak in the EVAP system... I suspect the diaphram in the cruise servo... anyone have this problem? Regards.

Welcome me to the bad tranny crowd. My 3 Yr warranty expired on Sept 30, here it is Dec 9 and I found myself getting my 21,000 mile 2001 Ram towed to the dealer with a smoking trans...quit on me with NO warning whatsoever in the middle of a busy freeway.. Since new, I have had some minor problems, but after this few miles I would never dream that the trans would let go. I have not towed anything heavy, pretty much have taken spectacular care of it including a recent trans service at the dealer. So to reward me, I had to tow it to the dealer ($175) and the dealer is charging me $90 just to tell me what I probably already know - new transmission. So I am out $300 and I have not even started down the repair path yet. I have to say that these transmissions are the biggest Piles of crap. There are posts miles long and Dodge won't do ANYTHING to help out. What were they thinking. They cannot even be rebuilt. Essentially they are throwaways. If in fact it's a new trans, I will be out some big $$, but If Chrysler won't fix it I won't ever be back. My friend's Tundra tows a heavy trailer to his jobsites every day and it has 105,000 miles on it with no problems at all. It also cost less than my RAM did.

I should have listened to my friends. I am preparing myself for the worst and this may be the last Dodge I ever own.

My 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L 4X4 QC is presently in the shop for a MAJOR transmission repair/replacement. I've serviced it regularly as suggested by the manual and only have 63K miles on it. I just recently started towing a travel trailer earlier this year and didn't expect any problems since I have the largest V8 for this model and the heavy duty transmission cooler. Based on what I've read here and other bulletin boards, this is not an isolated incident in the least. SELL or trade your 1500 NOW before you get a $3,400 repair bill like the one I have. Has anyone had any luck getting repair cost relief from Dodge or the dealers??

To the person who posted the non working cruise control and mil light. On the rear differential, pull the sensor that is in it out. Clean it really good, then put it back in. That will fix the cruise and mil.

I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab 4x4 pickup with 70000 miles. It has no power idles rough and the transmission just went out. This was my first Dodge and will be my last. Even if it ran good I still can't afford it's 10 mile to the gallon fuel economy. I should have bought another Chevy. I have a 1996 Chevy z-71 with 313,000 miles on it and runs better and gets better gas mileage!
