1991 Dodge Spirit 3.0L from North America

Summary:

Reliable and cheap to own

Faults:

Seats sit back towards the floor.

Leaks oil.

Exhaust valves stay open so it burns oil in Park.

General Comments:

Very reliable car. Great on gas; put in 50$ and it lasts 350km.

Most transmissions will need to be replaced.

Engine has expensive oil leaks, but won't badly affect the engine.

Great pick up speed.

Will take you up a 52km, 8% grade without overheating.

Haven't had to fix anything else.

You're right they're great cars, and also right that the transmissions with the 3.0 V6 are problematic. However the transmissions found with the 2.5 liter four cylinder were fine. Better to look for the four cylinder car.

1991 Dodge Spirit 2.5L EFI from North America

Summary:

Would buy another

Faults:

The drivers side window wouldn't open, I got the parts for it, just never got around to fixing it.

In cab trunk latch never worked right, one day it would work, others it wouldn't.

Transmission dropped at 201000km. Was driving home from work, wouldn't shift out of second. Was told by the dealer that the spider pin probably fell out. Apparently it's a common problem.

General Comments:

Was a great second car, got it in Grade 10, easy to upkeep, and nice and spacious for hauling friends around.

Back seats folded down into the trunk, made it nice for hauling guitars, etc. I slept in it one time, with my legs in the trunk, worked well, if you're not claustrophobic. LOL.

Very fun and quick car, easily got 28MPG highway, prob around 18MPG city.

I wish I would have fixed the transmission, and drove it another 50k.

1991 Dodge Spirit from North America

Summary:

It is a very reliable car, but not much else

Faults:

Not much... this is a very reliable car. The only major expense was $500 wort of repairs (Including a complete tune-up and exhaust work) to try to get it to pass Ohio Emissions Check, but it still failed.

General Comments:

This is a very reliable car. It had very low maintenance costs for me since little ever went wrong with it. The base 4 cylinder engine didn't have much power or pick up, but the gas savings made up for it. This made a good car for the 7 years I owned it.

The only thing I didn't like about it was the interior. The speakers were awful and it is not comfortable on long trips.

1991 Dodge Spirit 3.0L from North America

Summary:

This is a fairly adjile tank

Faults:

Nothing except for the tranny had to be rebuilt about a year after my parents bought it. Which the tranny is a common problem with these cars. The car got its first tune up at 234,000 and runs like new. Compression is still perfect. But this car has been babied since new. The only EXTREMELY annoying this about this car is the wiring has a short and it beeps all the time (the same beep as when you have your door open and the car running)

General Comments:

This is my first car and I'm 16 so I do abuse it. I kinda feel bad about it because its been babied for the past 15 years. But the harder I drive it the better it performs. It just won't die. Its not terrible for speed 0-60 mph in 8.7 seconds I times it the other day, but the completely bald tires probably add some time to it. It handles fairly well for having a completely shot front end. And last of all the body is indestructible I've accidentally hit a couple of snow banks which didn't even budge at about 40 km per hour and nothing wrong with the car.

1991 Dodge Spirit R/T 2.2 DOHC turbo from North America

Summary:

Very fun, very fast, and a good car

Faults:

At 46,000 miles the carrier shaft universal joint failed- cheap repair.

The head gasket has leaked coolant slightly for quite some time, but the leak is getting worse- I will need to replace it soon.

General Comments:

I cannot describe to you how fast this car is. In a straight line, it will out accelerate all, but a VERY few cars.

Fuel economy is outstanding! 224 horsepower and I get 28.5 mpg on the highway and 22 in the city in a mid-sized sedan.

Cornering is really good. It's right up there with a sports sedan.

This car is very comfortable with lots of room. I am 6' 5" and long trips are pleasant.

The temperature control is my only complaint. It is very difficult to keep the interior a consistent temperature.

This car is very reliable. It is important that the engine is serviced strictly to factory specifications. If not, there will be timing belt problems. Luckily, if the timing belt breaks or slips, no engine damage will occur with this particular engine.
