I agree the Chrysler four bangers in the past were unreliable and used more oil than fuel there Mitsubishi motors were not great, but who knows they may build a better generation motor time will tell.
I have 155,000 miles on my SRT-4. It has 398 hp, and only problems I can find with it is the shifting; it's the longest short throw I have ever driven, but the car is a beast.
Other than that I have had 0 problems. Keep in mind to maintain your vehicle regularly and take care of it. You can't get in it every day and pound on it. Any car won't last.
Oh, and as far as bang for the buck? Pffff I smoked Cobra Mustangs, Corvettes, the old z06's, 350z and I always love taking a dump all over an STI or an EVO :)
