1991 Eagle Talon AWD TSi Turbo review from North America
"140HP beats mostly everything on the street, while only being a V-4!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
1996 - New tranny (it was easier to replace the whole thing than to fix 1st and 2nd gears) at 23,000! Dealer paid.
1996 - New clutch and fly-wheel. Dealer paid. Needed a new battery also.
1997 - Air emission sensor went bananas, that was not under warranty at $500.
Seat-belts and transfer case were recalled and replaced. Rear defrost terminal fell off the glass, nobody will take the risk to fix it, either will I.
1998 - Alternator and 2nd battery.
1998 - Brakes, rotors, front axle, bushings, both rear calipers ($500) ceased.
Power steering fluid leak... repaired.
Parking brake tightened 4 times by now.
Horn hasn't worked well since 1996! I also own a 1995 & 1998 Talon, both which have faulty horns. Eagle should send a recall out for that damn horn!
In December, 2000 I had light smoke/steam rising out of my hood while driving. I took it over to JOE COTTON FORD in CAROL STREAM, IL 60188, what a mistake! They told me that I BLEW THE HEAD GASKET ($1000), and I might need to replace THE HEADS, if they were warped ($1000)! I couldn't believe what JOE COTTON FORD said. I wanted a second opinion. I towed my Talon to an independent shop who said had experience with the Talon/Eclipse. After 2 hours, the small shop mechanic called with news of a leak in a heater hose ($100 including labor). He informed me that nothing was wrong with the head gasket nor the heads! Stay away from the dealerships, and go with the small guys, it saved me over $2000! JOE COTTON FORD tried to rip me off, but it didn't happend to this blonde!
General comments?
I love my '91 Talon AWD TSi Turbo, and will keep it forever!
Stay away from dealerships, do it yourself if you can.
With these cars, always get a second opinion because not too many mechanics know how to work on these cars.
I run synthetic oil, and have experienced few repairs with a car that's 10+ years old! It makes a difference in smaller cars.
