1989 Ferrari F40 review from UK and Ireland
"In 2 words, superb, expensive"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Relay board gives constant trouble, engine shuts down while driving and goes onto one bank fro limp home, windows are sticky, clutch slave cylinder needed replacement (integral with bellhousing), bit and bobs break and sieze on the car. Also had a really hard stone hit the bonnet leaving a scar in the composite (£24000 for replacement bonnet!!) managed to find a company to repair this damage very well, only cost £6500 to repair. Wheels are magnesium so they need to be refurbedby specialists who know what theyre doing.
General comments?
What an experience, the car is an absolute dream to drive, the steering is a bit heavy (No power steering) and unservoed brakes take getting used to, but once warmed up take only a little more pressure to operate properly! This is a magnificent car, the F50 I had was also great, but the noise from it was unbearable in the cockpit. The F40 is just right! This is the closest you can come to a perfect supercar without all the electronics holding you back, this is just you and the road!
Ownership is a very expensive business with this car, I have owned it for 5 months and all it does is remove money from your wallet in great big lumps, parts are becoming difficult to find and maranello don't seem to stock most of the spares that you need to keep it on the road.
If you can afford it get one when it appears on the market. Skip the more technically superior F50 and Enzo and go for one of these cars, you will be most satisfied. Mine was a bit of a dog when I got it needing a few bits done to it so got it at a reasonable price (£159000) well I thought so anyway.
This car becomes like a lover.
