"Great car, appalling dealers"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Phase variator failure.

General comments?

Don't believe anyone who tells you that Fiat will replace the variator free of charge - most will deny that the problem exists, then those who will change it will omit the essential cambelt and tensioner replacement and you could end up with a very expensive engine rebuild while Fiat deny that the poor variator replacement was responsible.

Oh, and check the car for damage when you collect it from servicing!

I got the variator replaced on mine for free, despite it not showing any problem. I contacted Fiat UK directly and told them what I wanted. It was all arranged through a local dealer.

I think it's worth contacting Fiat rather than just a dealer.

I'm also fairly sure dealer quality varies considerably. The two in my town were OK though not super.

Cracking car by the way.

Hi I am thinking of getting a barchetta, but what is the variator and how do you tell if there is a problem??

The cam variator is a device that alters the engine camshaft valve timing at set engine revs to increase the engine power. Most makers have a device to do this.. the mechanicals vary. In practice its VVTI (except its fitted to a Fiat) and the Barchetta's engine is made by Alfa. Confused?

On pre '98 Barchetta's and most Alfa's the variator used to suffer from carbon build up on the linkages. The variator then jammed somewhere in its range. The effect is a loss of power and a strong tractor diesel sound. Later models had a different variator which doesn't have the problem. Supposed to be a free Fiat fix. However The B ceased production in '05 and the affected cars were pre '98 so I doubt Fiat would be very sympathetic now if asked for a free replacement.
