1997 Fiat Brava SX from UK and Ireland - Comments

19th Oct 1997, 00:00

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Trim came off within 3 days of delivery, loud noise from engine, lots and lots of squeaks & rattles, indicators made a funny 'pinging' noise, still not sorted, bulbs gone, rubbish quality build.

General comments?

I have never before owned a Fiat, and believe me, I won't again either!!!

The quality of the car is poor, the economy is rubbish, the trim level is poor, the only saving grace is that the stereo is okay, but that is all.

Not very impressed!!

Why on earth do 1.4 Brava owners complain about the weedy little engine and poor economy? The 1.6 16v struggles to produce the goods without "red -lining" the engine at each gear change so what chance has the smaller engine got?. My 1996 1.6SX has covered 86,000 miles and has had its share of faults - leaking steering rack, leaking shocks, a tendency to flood on cold start days, the usual rattles and minor electrical niggles. Fiat dealers are thin on the ground too. The car is cheap to buy however and I dispute that the build quality of a 306 Peugeot is better- my sister in law has a 18 month old example and its rough engine, tinny body work and uninspiring interior leave me cold.

Just traded my old car (Ford) in as it was starting to show signs of wear, only done 154,000 miles and still going strong! Now have a 1.6/16v SX. Not too happy at seeing all the gripes others have had, but so far I am well pleased with my Fiat, everything works as it should and it ain't no snail.

With winter coming on, cold mornings and all, we will see how it copes.
