1994 Ford Aerostar XL review from North America
"The tank shaped like a van"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Freeze plugs started leaking at about 170,000 miles.
Oil pump failed at about 200,000 miles. Getting at this to change it out was not fun.
Multifunction switch needed to be replaced at 165,000 miles.
Brake caliper seized at 190,000 miles.
Rear radio controls failed at around 140,000 miles.
A/C system needed major work at 180,000 miles.
The only other issues were routine tune up and wear and tear items.
General comments?
This thing was darned near indestructible. It traveled from one side of the country to the other. Routine things would go wrong with it, but no major issues other than the oil pump -- and that was at 200,000 miles.
It had a fair amount of interior room and was a good hauler when you took the seats out. Rear wheel drive made it better for towing.
Not a lot of power, but it kept up with traffic and got about 22 mpg on the highway.
The only real negative was handling. Skinny 14 inch tires on a tall van made this thing a little scary on mountain roads, especially if I happened to have a trailer hooked to it.
Finally traded it for a newer Ford Windstar (oops) for added safety features.
