1988 Ford Bronco II XLT 4x4 from North America - Comments

"Great running little offroader with endurance to go on"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Alternator died -- my fault, probably not a good idea putting a 700 watt strain on an old battery and original alternator after 120,000 miles.

Transmission - Planetary destroyed, I ran it to death after normal expected transmission problems. I replaced the tranny with one from a junkyard, now all is well.

Battery - I just got a bigger one, stock is too small.

Exhaust - I hate NC too much rust, replacing soon, BTW get rid of the DUAL CATS and just get one CAT easy done.

O2 sensor - my fault cut the wire when replacing transmission.

Starter - after 120,000 acceptable.

Full Tune up - go for premium parts, not only will it run better it will last you longer.

Overall most of the seriousness was my fault, but for any old bronco II owner... go buy ZMAX system additive... the stuff really works.

General comments?

This is my second Ford Bronco II first being an 85 2.8 liter carborated, they are easy to work on, and no matter what you do to them they will run forever with exception of the tranny.

I'm 6'2 240 and the seats are comfortable and more than enough headroom.

They drive like a car with a turning radius of most residential streets.

When kept with regular maintenance these vehicles will go on for a long time.

Be wary of seals and the transmission, pay attention to these and you will never have any major problems.

Thank you for your views on the 1988 Bronco II. I also am an owner of the same car and am very satisfied with its performance and durability. We just replaced the starter at 196,000 and have not yet had any problems with the transmission (although it seems to skip every once in a while. I like to hear about positive reports on Bronco's because often enough people that are uneducated about the vehicle mock it. If they only knew what a fine piece of machinery it is, they would have more respect for the beloved Bronco II. If you would like to contact me to talk about our cars, feel free to E-mail me at Stephladyb@aol.com. Thank you.
