I bought this car on a Friday in February. The very next day, the over drive light started flashing so I took it back to the dealer and lost the car for two weeks. They replaced that transmission and the clutch. This should have been my first warning.
When I acquired the car, the passenger's window was broken.
When I finally got my car back after two weeks, the compact disc player broke.
The car struggles to drive now.
It is March 3, 2003 and the over drive light has started flashing again.
My parents suggested to me after the first incident with the overdrive to take the car back, but I decided to give the car the benefit of the doubt.
It is my first car, and all I have to say is listen to your parents.
This car has been driving me crazy since I purchased it about a month ago.
It was being repaired for two weeks and I have only had it for two weeks and the same problem seems to be emerging.
I listened to every single sound the car made afraid of the next thing that would go wrong with the car.
I felt more comfortable driving my parents' 1987 mini van.
I have decided that I am taking the car back, and if the dealer refuses to take the car back I am taking him to court.
No one should be put through what I have experienced, I spent $5300 on this car and I will never buy a car from Ford again.
This has been the worst experience that a first time car owner has been put through and I think that I might just walk back and forth to University next year instead of buying another car.
Our 1998 Contour is now in the shop to be repaired for the hundredth time. We have had to replace the whole power-steering unit. The timing belt. Air compressor. Now we find out that this car that we bought in 1998 as a program car does not have the original engine in it. There will never be another Ford in this family again.
I also own a 1996 Ford Contour, and the O/D light started doing the blinking thing (complete with viciously hard shifting) about 2 weeks ago. It only happens after the car has been driving over 40 minutes at regular speeds, or if I've gone over 75 on the expressway.
My Contour has 110,000 miles on it, and I was planning on buying a new car in 2005.
However, after reading the large amounts of complaints on-line, I think it might be best to unload it on my nearest dealership, and buy a new car now.
I will still buy a Ford car however, as I have owned five, and this is the first time I've had any major problems occur under 145,000 miles.
THE CONTOUR IS A BAD CAR. STILL, I HOPE NONE OF YOU HOLD IT AGAINST FORD. FORD IS A GOOD COMPANY, BUT EVERY FEW DECADES ONE CAR IS SIMPLY A CHRONIC BAD DESIGN.
I have a 1997 Ford Contour and it has been nothing, but problematic. My check engine light was flashing and it ended up needing a new coil or something witch was a $400 ordeal. My coolant started leaking, every time I accelerate it jumps and when I brake it's a bit jerky.. and NOW my O/D light will flash every now and again. Usually if I'm maintaining a speed over 40 MPH for longer than 10 minutes. I don't know if my tran is going out or not. From my research it might be a torque thing? Someone help. I hate this car.
Never again will I buy a Ford. I had a Toyota corolla that went through HELL, had well over 1K on it, was over 10 years old and the most we had to do was replace the starter and get new brake pads once. It ran until it died and was so reliable.
