1976 Ford Cortina XL review from UK and Ireland
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Not much, considering the age. Steering column, track rod ends, carb re-conditioned, couple of rear exhaust sileces, fuel pump, battery, auto-box inhibitor reley, that's about it, but needs work now - restortion of body work mainly. Needs new starter motor, also some work to prop shaft and rear axle.
General comments?
An enthusiasts car, for summer use. Done alot of hard miles since 've had it, with no real trouble. Was extremely unreliable for a while, then found the fuel pump was at fault - not enough pressure at start up, so it didn't like starting ! Been off road over two years now, being restored a bit at a time. Too rare these days, and only just being recognised and a deserving classic. Engine very strong - lasts for years, with little effort, but damp starting still a little fussy. Drinks fuel when used - 16 MPG at worst, but I've had 35 MPG on long run (Highlands of Scotland from Sheffield on holiday, 2000 plus miles in one week!)
